Conan O'Brien talks to Charlie Rose

Friday, January 29, 2010 11:54 PM

Here's an interview of Conan O'Brien back in 2006. On part three, Charlie Rose asked Conan whether The Tonight Show was the dream.

The last video talks about career and some good advice for young people. This is one of the reasons I like Conan, he's very smart and humble, kind of like your wacky older brother who you can talk to and give you great advice on life.

It's the same thing he did on his last show on the Tonight Show where you told his audience not to be cynical.

Leno On Oprah

7:19 PM

Jay Leno was interviewed on Oprah and he gave his side of the story about the debacle with NBC and Conan. He was trying to come out the better man but in the interview, I think he just made himself look more like a cry baby.

He said that he didn't push Conan O'Brien out of the Tonight Show but that it was Conan who pushed him out first from when NBC made a deal with Conan O'Brien to keep him from jumping to another network.

Here's the interview and video.

Jay Leno also talked about his interview with Jimmy Kimmel on 10@10 and that Jimmy Kimmel "suckered-punched" him and he decided to take the high road.

Here's the video of Jimmy Kimmel's response to that.

It looks like my initial thoughts that Conan O'Brien being the better man is dead on.

More Videos of Apple iPad

4:28 PM

I've been reading a lot of comments about the Apple iPad and I would say 90% of the comments are negative.

Here's the most common complaints.
1. No Flash.
2. No multi-tasking
3. No camera
4. Tied to AT&T
5. Oversized iPhone
6. iPhone OS?

It's funny how the Internet dismisses a product that hasn't even come out yet. And they they are already predicting it to fail. Sound like when the iPhone first came out.

Sure, there is no guarantee the iPad will sell. Yes, a netbook may be better since it is a full computer. But have you actually used a netbook? It's small, but the performance is horrible for a full computer.

If you are using a netbook for its intended purpose of e-mail, web browsing, chat, photo and video. Then yes, the netbook is more capable than the iPad since it can do Flash, video chat, etc. But the netbook is a horrible e-book reader. Who wants to read the New York Times on a netbook? I can barely read the article. Not to mention you can't flip it to portrait to read the full page.

There is of course the Amazon Kindle. But the Kindle doesn't do web browsing very well. And it's black and white only. And you can't install apps on it.

So the iPad is the bridge between both devices. It's not a full computer but half way there. It's not a dedicated e-book reader but more capable.

Another thing most people are missing is that the iPad is just the delivery mechanism for something bigger. What something is will be defined by the apps developers will be making for it, just like what they did to the iPhone.

Ever wonder why the iPhone is such a success even though Apple only came to the smartphone market 2 years ago? No hardware buttons so developers can create all the controls they want on it. Developers have full control on the user experience they want.

The iPad is not the end all and be all of devices. The apps the developers will make and what the consumers will want will define the success of this product. Imagine this, you're a doctor and you need to check a patient's chart. Get your iPad and check it there. You don't have to go to the patient's room or boot up your computer or lug your netbook around to check it. You can even fill out a prescription and e-mail it to the drug store for your patient right away.

People have been complaining about slow boot times for their laptops just to check their e-mail. Guess what, there's not boot time on the iPad!

Or how about this, you're a college student and carry 6 big books around plus notebooks to take notes. How about that being replaced by a 1.5lbs and 0.5 inch thick book. Would that save your back a lot! Plus you can type notes on it. I would have loved to have this device when I was in college.

People compare it to the iPhone as well asking why you can't make voice calls on it. Who the heck wants to use a 10 inch phone!?! What is this? the 80's?

And who on earth wants to carry a 10" inch camera? Even if you want to do video chat, how will you position the iPad? The only picture the other party will see is up your nose. I'm not saying the next generation iPad will not have a camera. But I think Apple and their design team thought about these things before they bring out a product. I mean, they are well known for their product and usability design right?

Some people may call me an Apple fanboy for this post. Just to let you know, I don't have a Mac, I don't have an iPhone. I have an iPod Touch and an iPod shuffle. It does what I want to do with it very well. I don't expect more out of it. I don't expect my 1st gen iPod Touch to do video, voice, etc. But it does what it's supposed to do very well.

I also don't expect to have an LCD screen on my iPod shuffle. But it does a great job playing my music when I'm on a 12 hour flight. People tend to forget that simplicity is sometimes the best way to do thing. Why complicate things with full OS, Flash, multi-tasking, camera when all you really want is to read a book, quickly check your e-mail or browse show times in your local movie theater? Who needs a netbook for that?

Here's another hands on video of the Apple iPad.

Teodoro grilled on Arroyo ties

12:00 PM

From the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

===================
MANILA, Philippines – Gilbert Teodoro found himself in the hot seat at a youth forum Friday when he and other presidential candidates were asked whether they would make President Macapagal-Arroyo accountable for anything anomalous that happened in her administration.

At the forum at the De La Salle University (DLSU)-Manila campus, moderator Ted Failon asked the presidential hopefuls: “Is there something for which President Arroyo should be held accountable? How should she be made accountable?”

At first, Teodoro, the administration presidential candidate, hesitated to give an answer, saying his previous working relationship with the President bars him from doing so.

“Just think about it, if I participate (in efforts to prosecute her), people would say ‘lulutuin mo lang’ (you’ll just fix it.) If I don’t participate, people would say I did not work for justice,” said Teodoro, who resigned as defense secretary to run in the May elections.

“In the end, anyone with reason to file a case against her should just do it. I should not interfere,” he added.

Failon reminded Teodoro that he and seven other presidential candidates—Senators Benigno Aquino III, Richard Gordon, Jamby Madrigal and Manny Villar, Olongapo Councilor JC de los Reyes, environmentalist Nicanor Perlas and preacher Eddie Villanueva—were required to answer “yes” or “no” to the question.

The eight were guests at the ANC-Youth 2010 Boto Para Sa Pagbabago forum held on the DLSU campus on Taft Avenue in Manila.

Teodoro took a deep breath before answering.

Familiar turf

“If I say ‘yes,’ I might be accused of riding on the popular sentiment against a party mate and former boss in the Cabinet. If I say ‘no,’ I would be depriving myself of the objectivity I need as President,” he replied. Cheers erupted afterward.

That Teodoro was in familiar turf apparently helped. Teodoro is a DLSU alumnus.

Madrigal, who answered “a resounding ‘yes”’ when asked whether she would make Ms Arroyo accountable, was apparently unsatisfied with Teodoro’s answer.

In the portion where all candidates were allowed to ask each other questions, Madrigal asked Teodoro whether he would recognize his debt of gratitude (utang na loob) to Ms Arroyo.

“Utang na loob means paying goodness with goodness. But if it’s otherwise, nothing is worth staining my reputation,” Teodoro answered in Filipino and English.

“So, did the President shower you with goodness?” Madrigal retorted.

“If you are given goodness, you pay back with goodness,” he said.

Justice to victims

“But would you give justice to the victims of the administration? Or would you adhere to party loyalty?” Madrigal shot back.

“Justice should prevail,” Teodoro said. “We have a judicial process and it should be observed.”

Failon cut the discussion at this point.

Ms Arroyo has been accused of stealing the 2004 presidential election, of corruption, of human rights violations and of other scandals the latest and most notable being the NBN-ZTE $329-M deal which Ms Arroyo later aborted
===================

Gibo does have a point though. He's in a no-win situation. Whether he answers yes or no, his opponents will have a way to attack him on his answer. Too bad that his connection with the administration will probably drag him down no matter what his qualifications are.

A Brief History Of Da Pinoy

10:08 AM

There is a lot of truth on this. Don't know the "historian"- author:

This brief history of the Philippines, told by a philosopher of the streets, is probably closest to the truth about ourselves.

What's the big deal when Lapu-Lapu killed Magellan in 1521? Nothing much really. During Lapu-Lapu's time, Mactan was strictly tribal. Think small, gid. There were no big ideas such as nationalism or geopolitics.

Lapu-Lapu was simply, the local siga-siga and Magellan was the culture-shocked Westerner, a native first-timer in the exotic east.

We lionize Lapu-Lapu as a hero and nationalist. Ang totoo, mayabang lang si Lapu-Lapu. But his defeat of a foreign invader, did not make a Filipino nation. The timing was wrong.. And don't you believe that bull That Spanish explorers came to find spices of the East to improve the taste of their bland cuisine. Their hidden agenda was to spread their kingdom through colonization, the euphemism for land grabbing.

During the 333 years of Spanish rule (1565-1898), hundreds of rebellion were waged by native firebrands in many parts of the archipelago.
Not one succeeded. Our rebels were either caught, garrotted, or simply ignored by the Commandante as nuisances. Puro malas!

The execution of Rizal in 1896 was a traumatic experience for Filipinos. Those who read Rizal's Fili and Noli were incensed by the Abuses of the church and state regime of the Spaniards. Emotions ran high, from Aparri to Jolo. The critical mass needed for nationhood was formed. At Last we could rebel as a people, as a nation.

The Katipunan did their battle heroics, originally led by the firebrand Bonifacio and later on by the crafty Aguinaldo. With more Katipunan charges (Sugod mga Kapatid), freedom seemed possible. Between 1897 and 1899, stealth, betrayal, and skullduggery bedeviled our prospect for independence. The Aguinaldo and Bonifacio factions engaged in an ugly infighting (the talangka mentality) resulting in the execution of Bonifacio.

Meantime, an American Admiral named Dewey (not Dewey Dee, the fast one) entered Manila Bay and defeated a lackluster Spanish navy.

Aguinaldo reneged on the pact of Biak-na-bato.

He resumed the revolution by proclaiming the Philippine Independence in Kawit. June 12. From who? We are still under the Americans & Spaniards at that time.

Meanwhile, American and Spanish soldiers held a "moromoro" battle in Intramuros with the Spaniards surrendering. Aguinaldo's republic and his KKK patriots were left out and ignored. Naisahan tayo... Minalas na naman.

The Filipino-American War broke out. Tall American soldiers looking like Clark Gable chased and battled the outlawed Filipino revolutionaries, ending in the capture of Aguinaldo in Isabela. Thanks to the mercenaries from Macabebe. This is the second time those Macabebe turn in their own kind first with the Spaniards. This was the mother of all kamalasan...

At that time, our population was 8 million. The gap between the rich and the poor was estimated at 30% middle-class and rich, 70% low-class and rural poor.

During the Commonwealth period (1901-1941), which followed, there were lots of learning on democratic principles, its structure and governance. Technology transfers were done on Constitutional Rights, Public Education, Transportation, Health, International Trade and Industrialization. The Americans turned out to be good tutors. Filipinos also went crazy over American brand products like Libby's corned beef and Portola sardines, Hershey's Kisses and Wrigley's chewing gum, Camel cigarettes and Model T Ford for the hacienderos of Pampanga and Iloilo .

Hollywood films made Pinoy males fantasize on Jean Harlow, Betty Grable, and Mae West. Thus, Filipino colonial mentality began. We fondly called this period Peace Time. By the way, American troops massacred innocent people in Balangiga. Mga hayup din pala! (http://www.bibingka.com/phg/balangiga/default.htm)

1941. Disaster! World War II! After attacking Pearl Harbor , the Japanese army invaded our country defeating the combined American and Filipino forces (USAFFE). General McArthur, the proud and hands ome Army chief, fled to Australia at the height of the battle. Then the Filipinos march to Bataan as the prisoner in the Death March.

For four miserable years we suffered the sadism of the Japanese militarists rule. Torture, famine, and death were for us, the order of the day... Kawawa. Malas na malas!

The American forces returned in 1945 to liberate the country. McArthur, General superiority complex himself, sporting Ray Ban sunglasses and corncob pipe swaggered back to Manila . Piqued at his humiliation in 1941, McArthur ordered the bombing and shelling of Manila till kingdom come. So he can get back at Japs for wrecking his R&R place in Asia. Malas na naman.

The whole-wide expanse South of Pasig - from Post Office to Vito Cruz, including all of Intramuros - was pulverized. Manila was the most destroyed city of World War II next to Tokyo .Our culture, our heritage, and historical assets (seven beautiful churches in Intramuros, hundreds of elegant Art Deco and neo-classical architecture in Paco ) were sacrificed recklessly and completely erased from the face of the earth. Sayang na sayang!

In 1946, we gained our Independence from the Americans. We were a free nation at last. A true Independence day for us July 4th 1946 not the June 12th that Aguinaldo decalare and Marcos celebrated. We had en ough exposure and lessons on how to govern a democratic country, the first in Asia . Our population was 17 million. The dollar exchange was US$1 to P2.

But there was still no peace from 1947 to 1966. A widespread communist rebellion led by Taruc, the Lava brothers, and its armed guerrillas called Hukbalahap (Supposed to be Hukbong Laban sa Hapon) waged bloody war with government troops and turn out to be nothing but bandits in disguised. Filipinos killed kapwa Filipinos. Malas na naman!

Our politicians and bureaucrats learned to engage in graft and corruption (What are we in power for?) - such as the war surplus bribery, the Tambobong wheeler-dealing and the Namarco scam. Talo!

Six presidents were elected to manage the country from 1947 to 1972, under the democratic system. They were Presidents Roxas, Quirino, Magsaysay, Garcia, Macapagal, and Marcos.

Economists looked back to the decades of the 50s and 60s as the best years of the Philippine economy, surpassing Asian countries. The nostalgia was naiveté, a useless ego-tripping. The gap between the rich and the poor remained big. 30% middle-class and rich, 70% low- class, rural and urban poor. We were 27 million people. US$1 was to P4.

During the late 60's, the Maoist communists led by Commander Dante intensified its drive to overthrow t he government.. Marcos added fuel to the fire by creating a communist spook. Violence and mayhem rule the streets. The youth went up in arms! Martial Law was declared in 1972 and Marcos became dictator. Freedom of assembly and expression went out of the window...

What followed were years of dictatorial abuse, crony capitalism, shackled free enterprise, near economic collapse and a demoralized middle class. The gap between the rich (30%) and poor (70%) remained in a quagmire. Pareho rin pala ang situation.

Our population was 40 million. Exchange rate was US$1 to P7... Kawawang kawawa! Malas na malas! In 1983, Ninoy Aquino, Marcos' exiled arch rival, was assassinated upon his return. Push came to shove. Cardinal Sin egged on the people on to protest. Outrage, self- pity, shame and fury raged and rumbled like a tidal wave, culminating in the incredible People Power Revolution. The very sick and obstinate Marcos fled (hijacked by Americans from Clark) to Hawaii (sounds like Paoay) where he died. His alleged millions of stolen dollars intact and unresolved. Up to now... Peso to dollar exchange is now US$1 to P20.

But People Power was our shining glory! The whole world applauded our saintly courage, our dignified defiance, our bloodless solution to expel a dictator. We were the toast of all freedom-loving countries, the envy of all oppressed people. In=2 01986, we placed Cory Aquino, Ninoy's widow, in Malacañang. She was virtuous, sincere and full of good intentions for the country. But what happens under Cory?

An Endless brown out and living in a portable generators is a must and monopolize be Cory's relatives who threw out her Energy Dept down to Pasig river.

The land reform she professed and promised was going good at first but after she found out her Hacienda Luisa will be greatly affected that program went down the Pasig river too!. No wonder that river is so polluted.

Coup attempts by Honasan, power struggle, political squabbles, and the infighting for juicy deals harassed the amateur Cory presidency. So nothing happened. No progress took place. The economy was still bad. The poor suffered more and more. Sure we got democracy back on its feet. But the Filipino resolve didn't happen. People Power pala was ningas cogon power.

Sayang na sayang! Tha gap between the rich and the poor remained at 30% (middle-class and rich), 70% (lower-class and rural/urban poor). Exchange rate was US$1 to P25. We were 55 million people.

In 1992, Cory's choice, Fidel Ramos, West Pointer, soldier, and hero of the People Power won the presidency. He had the bearing, the single-mindedness and the vision to bring the country to a tiger economy status.. Ramos was a terrific salesman of the Philippines to the world. He was able to hype a climate of an economic ground. He removed barriers to progress. He was an apostle of privatization. His mantra was, less government, more private sector! Fidel hit the right note and the economy went on a roll.

Fidel wanted to run for reelection but failed to swing the cha-cha (an idiotic acronym for Constitutional Change) so he could run again.

In 1997, the Asian economic crises struck, triggered by a balloons burst of the hyper speculative Bangkok economy. The financial debacle created a disastrous effects in the investment institutions of Manila, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Seoul and Taiwan.

All the Ramos gains evaporated into thin air. Malas na naman! The poor, specially Mang Pandoy, were poorer than ever.

1998 was showbiz time! The Erap para sa mahirap show opened to the chagrin of Makati Business Club.. Pasensya na po kayo, mga elitists. Democracy is also weird. The choice of the masa must be respected.

Catastrophe! Chavit Singson exploded jueteng bombs! For days on end, a nation sick in the stomach, sat through prime time TV aghast at watching the bizarre drama of alleged bribery, gambling, drunkenness, womanizing, deceit, and corruption. A lantern-jawed witness and a sexy intelligence "asset" hogged the witness stand.

Viewing the scandals on TV was like watching dogs mating in the public square. It's embarrassing but you can't take your eyes of them.

The impeachment trial serialized on TV was riveting. The defense lawyers, some wearing a canine sneer (ngiting aso) insulted our intelligence often. (Lokohin n'yo ang lelang n'yo). The whole country was stinking to high heavens.. The prosecution produced its own witnesses - Clarissa Ocampo, Emma Lim, Carmencita Itchon and many others.

Idols with feet of clay fell crashing into the dust. Those who voted against opening the enveloped were legalese, procedural, and sounding intellectually brilliant. Also heartless and thick-skinned. They couldn't fathom the heartbeat of the nation. Cardinal Sin, aging and sickly, called the people again. It was People Power II!

Same humongous and collective umbrage, same brinkmanship, and same staccato prayers! Generals Reyes and Villanueva simply joined the mammoth EDSA crowd. No US jets from Clark this time. Erap was out! Gloria was in!

Hope springs eternal. Malacañang regained its honor and dignity. Protocol was observed. Absurdity was gone.. Grammatical English was back. Now the first gentleman should have been named Mr. Pakyao, he has the monopoly of the graft behind Gloria's back.

2001... More catastrophies! The peso plummeted to a horrifying20US$ 1 to P51. The Abu Sayyaf (extremist ideologues? Or mindless barbarians) were into kidnapping and terrorism, gaining worldwide notoriety. Businesses are still closing shop. Thousands of workers are being retrenched. Prices of food and gasoline are very high. (Galunggong is P80 per kilo!) Our streets became permanent garbage dumps. Maggots multiply to spread disease. Our communities stink.

Again, the whole nation was witnessing sickening crimes attributed to people in the government. Talo na naman! We are now 75 million people but the gap between the rich, 30% (middle-class and rich), 70% (lower-class and rural/urban poor) remains the same for one century.

When will this end? It's been more than 350 years since Lapu's- Lapu's victory, 100 years since Rizal martyrdom and we're nowhere as a people, as a nation. Malas pa rin!

Some wise guy said the Filipino is a damaged culture. Bully! And what do you call other foreigners. They used slaves in their plantations, and land grabbed from the natives! What should we call such culture? Predatory Culture? Bully Culture? What about another country? How many countries did it put under the barrel of its gunships, so they could gloat that the sun never sets on their empire?" What shall we call this culture?

Sahib culture? Gunga Din culture? C'mon, give us a break!

We Filipinos have strengths and endearing values. We are Christians, God-fearing, and peace-loving. We are patient and tolerant (matiisin to a fault). We are musical. We sing our blues away. We have a sense of humor. (We concoct and text Imelda hyperboles and Erap malapropism. ) We learn fast because we are bilingual and highly educated. We've got thousands of MBA's and PhD's in economics and management from AIM, WHARTON, HARVARD, UCLA, etc (most of them now overseas).

We've got a surplus of technocrats for nation-building.
We want to work if there are vacancies.
We want to go into business if we have the capital.
We want to obey the law if the law is being enforced.
We want to live and die here, if there is peace and order.

But, but, and but. We have many shortcomings. We are immature in our politics. Given a choice on whom to elect: a handsome pabling movie star or an honest and brilliant political scientist, we'll vote for the movie star.

No brainer tayo dito. Talo! We have many stupidities. Like dogs, we pee (Bawal umihi dito) on walls and tires. Our driving is suicidal. Our service quality is inferior.

Clerks at City Hall act arrogant. Sales ladies at department stores don't know their product features. No exchange No return even it is defective you have to argue for it. Tourists get mugged by thugs in uniform.

Police lay traps so they can catch you and ask for bribe. What's wrong with us? We don't have a great leader. And good governance. (In Singapore, Lee Kwan Yu did it. The constituency profile is similar to Filipinos.) Admittedly, this country is impossible, tiresome, and frustrating.

But it's the only country we've got.
We live and die here.
Will we ever see the dawn?
Dios na mahabagin, Kailan pa kaya? Ubos na ang aming luha. Katog na ang aming mga tuhod. Tuyot na ang aming utak. Hingal na ang aming puso.
Dios na mahabagin, isalba Mo po kami. Hindi po kami talunan. At lalo pong hindi kami tanga. Sunod-sunod lang po ang malas.

Thoughts On The New Apple iPad

2:08 PM

After looking at the demo and specs of the new Apple iPad. This is my take on it.

It's basically a big iPod Touch. But it's an iPod Touch with productivity apps like iWork designed specifically for the Apple iPad.

It runs all your standard iPhone and iPod Touch apps from the app store. Games will be a big thing on this as it's like a huge kick-ass Nintendo DS. Except for the controls.

The accelerometer will have you control it as you would on the iPhone. I used an iPod Touch and use the Calendar, Mail and Address Book a lot. It's certainly nice that the iPad has those as well.

The iBook Store is certainly a good feature to have. The strength of the Apple mobile devices doesn't come from the device itself, but from the App Store. If you think about it, a lot of other devices has more features and are cheaper than the iPod or iPhone. But how come Apple devices outsells the competition? It's because of the App Store.

Sandisk makes a better MP3 player and it includes radio and whatever else most geeks want. But the problem is, there's no dedicated site for buying music. That's the genius of Apple. They built the iPod and built an iTunes store around it. Seeing how people responded to having one simple site to use for buying music, they expanded it to the App Store when they introduced the iPod touch and iPhone.

Now there's over 140,000 apps in the App Store plus the music in the iTune store. Now they have the iBook Store to buy your books. Brilliant!

Reading some of the forums on Apple, you can see a lot of people complaining the new iPad as a glorified iPhone with no phone capability. They are also complaining that there is no camera so it's useless. Another complaint is the large bezel around it. It sounds just like the complaint when the iPhone first came out.

What people seem to forget is that Apple is really good at building products that will either change the game or is highly adaptive to future technologies. Sure, they don't get it right all the time, but people are pretty smart at figuring out how they can adapt Apple products to their daily lives.

Remember when the iPhone first came out, people didn't really know what to do with it. No physical keypad, $599 in price, 2G network, 2 megapixel camera, etc. Now look how it's doing. It's the best selling smartphone out there. Ever since Apple came out with the iPhone, every other manufacturer is trying to be the new iPhone.

I have an iPod Touch and I love my iPod Touch because of the apps I can get on it. I used to have a Windows Mobile device and let me tell you, it was a pain to find the apps for it. Not only that, every single device has a different version so some will work, some won't.

I didn't want to get it when it first came out but I needed to replace my PDA (HP PDA running Windows Mobile). I was really worried that I couldn't run the things I needed on my PDA like calendar sync, address book, etc. The first time I got the iPod Touch, it really couldn't do much. But as new iPhone OS came out, it became more and more capable. Now I can do IMAP e-mail sync, CalDav sync and address book sync. Not to mention it's a way better web browser than any of the Windows Mobile browsers I've used.

I've also installed a ton of games on my iPod Touch that I don't see the need to buy a Nintendo DS. That's one thing that Apple didn't even thought of when they first came out with the iPhone. Now the iPhone games are giving Nintendo DS a run for their money.

I believe the new Apple iPad would do really well as an e-book reader, specially now that it has a dedicated iBook store. The iBook store features books from five different publishers like Pengiun, MacMillan, Simon and Schuster, HarperCollins and Hachett. If you noticed, McGraw-Hill wasn't mentioned on the presentation. This might be punishment for the leak by McGraw-Hill CEO yesterday on CNBC.

Apple didn't go with e-ink screen or OLED probably because they wanted the iPad to run like a regular computer when you view the screen. e-ink doesn't do color very well and OLED is quite expensive and not tested for devices this big.

The productivity apps like iWork is going to make this a netbook since that is part of the reason why people buy a netbook anyway. To have a lighter notebook computer. Of course, you can't install just any regular apps on this thing so there are a lot of people complaining that it's a netbook with limited capabilities. Not to mention Adobe Flash doesn't run on it just like it doesn't on the iPhone.

Those complaint may be true, but a lot of the other complaints I hear from owning a netbook is that it is underpowered. I have a friend who works in a computer store and from what I hear, the underpowered complaints comes mainly from buying a netbook expecting it to run like a regular laptop. You know, those with dual-core and 4Gb of RAM and high end graphics. They install Photoshop on it and all other kinds of software then complain why their netbooks runs so slow.

I think Apple is smart for limiting the apps you can install on the iPad to those apps you can run on the iPhone. Those apps are built for mobile devices so they are not as memory hogs like full blown applications.

Doing this will keep the user experience high and won't disappoint users. There is probably also no multi-tasking on it so it won't slow down the system as well. Apple tends to make sure that their devices runs as advertised so as not to take away from the user experience. Sure, it may cripple the device, but you can't complain that it's slow or unresponsive.

So here is where I see how the Apple iPad will be used by most people. It will be used like an iPod Touch for music, calendar, address book, e-mail and web browsing. It will be used as an alternative to the Amazon Kindle.

It will be used as an alternative to your desktop or notebook computer since it will be a "pure" netbook as what a netbook was supposed to be for in the first place (web, mail, photo, video, etc.). It will also be a replacement laptop for people who go on vacation or need to take simple notes and check their e-mail when you install iWork on it.

The iPhone SDK 3.2 will bring new apps that most people haven't even thought of that will probably revolutionize how people use a netbook. Students may use this to take notes or even do presentations without lugging around an expensive notebook.

Here's how I view how I may use this product if I ever get one. I can use it as a netbook to browse, chat and check e-mail. Take notes when I'm on a seminar, use it for presentation and an e-book reader. I may even use it as a photo frame when it's not in use. And when I'm watching TV, I can use it on the couch to browse the web or check e-mail. I can do that with a netbook, but the iPad seems to be an easier device to carry and use.

Another thing would be how the medical community would be using this device. There are already medical apps available on the iPhone and they are revolutionizing the way doctors deal with their patients. Let's see what new apps developers make for this iPad.

Who knows, maybe I'll wait for the 2nd generation iPad to see the new developments and better features. As I rule, I don't recommend buying first generation devices.

The New Apple iPad

12:06 PM

Apple has unveiled it's new tablet computer called the iPad.

It is basically a large iPhone with 9.7" screen, LED backlit IPS display, WIFI 802.11n built in, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and optional 3G radio.

All iPhone and iPod Touch apps runs on it unmodified. It runs on the new 1Ghz Apple A4 chip and includes 16-64Gb of flash storage. It's 0.5" thin and 1.5 pounds. Full capacitive multi-touch display.

They are offering the iPad with AT&T 3G for $14.99 for 250mb of data and $29.99 for unlimited data. It is also unlocked and no contract so you can move to any carrier you want.

It plays Youtube HD video and it also looks like the games on the iPad are smooth.

Prices start at $499 for the 16Gb model, $599 for the 32GB model and $699 for the 64Gb model. If you want the 3G built-in, it's an extra $130.

Perhaps the most exciting new feature is the iBooks store for the iPad. It combines the use of a netbook for web browsing, e-mail, photos, videos and music with that of an E-book reader like the Amazon Kindle.

The iPad takes it a step further by making a better e-book reader with full color screen with multi-touch feature. You can also change the font style and size on the books and buy them direct from the iBook store. You can also read newspapers like a regular newspaper on the iPad and some of the articles includes video as well.

Using the mobile Safari browser makes it a netbook with better browsing experience and using the iPhone's mail and calendar feature allows you to use it like a mega iPhone. It also includes Google Maps and I guess if you have the 3G plan you get GPS as well.

The new app that was made for the iPad is an iPad version of iWorks. So you have Pages, Keynote and Numbers. Each of the app sells for $9.99 each. So $9.99 for Pages, $9.99 for Keynote and $9.99 for Numbers. I'm not sure if you can attach the iPad to a projector but that would be awesome if you can wouldn't it?

The iPad can sync via USB to iTunes like a regular iPhone or iPod, Apple is also selling a new accessory dock for the iPad to make it stand up like a picture frame. Another dock is a keyboard dock.

Here's the live coverage from Engadget.

Apple also touts that the iPad's battery can last up to 10 hours and 1 month on standby. So you can watch a movie for the entire flight on one charge.

Pimentel apologizes; Roxas gets ice cream, cake

3:24 PM

From the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

==================
MANILA, Philippines—Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas’ remark that it was a pity some men turn vulgar when they grow old may have worked.

On Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr. asked for forgiveness for using “intemperate language” during heated Senate debates on Monday on a resolution seeking to censure Sen. Manuel Villar over alleged “double insertions” in the controversial C-5 road budget.

Pimentel had said Roxas would have his own “insertions” now that he was married.

“To those who I might have hurt in this chamber by the use of intemperate language or unseemly expressions, I apologize and beg their forgiveness from You through You, O Lord,” Pimentel said as he led the chamber in its opening prayer.

To keep cool

He said that “in the heat, some of us tend to use words that are coarse and vulgar.”

“Forgive us, then, O Lord, our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us …”

Pimentel added: “Finally, we pray, Lord, You allow all of us to keep our cool so that we are not distracted by side issues.”

‘I will defend Korina’

Earlier, before the session began, a visibly miffed Roxas said that Pimentel owed his wife, broadcaster Korina Sanchez, an apology for the crude joke.

“There has been no apology and I don’t expect anything. I will defend my wife because her honor was trampled on and I will not allow that. But he does not need to apologize to me, he should apologize to her,” Roxas said.

Roxas added: “Kung kailan pa siya tumanda saka pa siya naging bastos (It’s a shame he became vulgar when he got old).”

Roxas is the Liberal Party vice presidential candidate. Villar is the Nacionalista Party standard-bearer.

Demand for apology

Monday’s debate took a combative turn when, commenting on Roxas’ statement that he had made no insertions in the national budget, Pimentel remarked: “After your marriage, you will have your insertions.”

Roxas burned at the remark and shouted: “I demand that that be removed from the record! This is an affront to my wife.”

In a separate exchange, also on Monday, with Sen. Jamby Madrigal, Pimentel had said: “At least, I am not an abused child.”

Senate demeaned

Akbayan party-list Rep. Riza Hontiveros, a Liberal Party senatorial candidate, said Pimentel’s joke demeaned the Senate proceedings and did not help his ally Villar at all.

“I am asking Senator Pimentel to apologize over his insertion joke. It was absolutely uncalled for, irrelevant, and it should not have been said at all, especially by a senator who has a well-respected reputation as a freedom fighter,” Hontiveros said.

“They can defend Senator Villar for all they want without being anti-women or without losing civility,” Hontiveros said.

No quarrel with Korina

Pimentel told reporters he had no intention of insulting Korina Sanchez when he made the quip about insertions.

“Certainly, that was not my intention … I have no quarrel with Korina. I have respect for her as a very able host of a popular TV show and a lady. I have nothing against her,” Pimentel said.

“So, I cannot apologize for something that I did not intend. Well, maybe if I was misunderstood then maybe I should apologize. But only up to that,” he said.

“But let me just make it clear, I have no quarrel with her. Why should I have a fight (with Korina),” he added.

Ice cream for Mar

Pimentel said his words should not be taken as an attack on women.

“My wife is a woman and my grandmother was a woman. I have four girls in my family so it’s impossible that it was a slur against women,” he added.

Roxas said Sanchez gave him a scoop of ice cream and a cake after he stood up for her on the Senate floor.
==================

It didn't exactly looked like Pimentel apologized to Korina. But it does seem like the argument at the senate is getting nasty.

You know what I would like to see? The senators throwing chairs at each other like in Taiwan. Now that would make for an interesting argument!

Villar’s leadership

Saturday, January 23, 2010 11:15 PM

I just got this e-mail. I'm not against Manny Villar or for any of the Presidential candidates. I just found this article interesting and give some people different opinions on the different candidates. Take it how you want.

This article came from this the Action for Economic Reform website and was published on January 11, 2010 on Business World, pages S1/4 to S1/5.

=====================

Manny Villar is on a roll. The latest survey conducted by Social Weather Stations (SWS) shows that he has narrowed the gap between him and Noynoy Aquino, the frontrunner, to 11%. The survey came in the wake of a media blitzkrieg during the holiday season.

A friend of mine, an executive in a major television network, conservatively estimates that Villar has spent P2 billion since the third quarter of 2009 for his media campaign. (Other estimates are on the high side, ranging between P3 billion and P4 billion.) should he win, he'll definitely get this back!! another GMA in the making!!

His ads are very populist. In one ad, responding to Michael V’s complaint about the prohibitive cost of education, Villar says that college education must be free. Why Villar focuses on college education, not on basic education, which is a bigger problem, is easy to answer. Villar wants to get the vote of college students. Elementary and high school children don’t vote.

Populist rhetoric works during elections; that was part of Gloria Arroyo’s tactics in 2004. She ordered a price subsidy on electricity, mainly benefiting the rich and the non-poor; she wasted billions of pesos for dole-out; she stalled revenue-enhancement reforms so she would be popular. All this led to a fiscal crisis, and the people had to suffer from the consequences of Arroyo’s irresponsible populism. But Arroyo won the elections -- her populist rhetoric and action attracted votes, though the decisive factor was the cheating.

Villar is doing a Gloria. Villar, like Gloria, is a master of populist language bordering on demagoguery. He even adopts the program of the Left so he can get its command votes. In his obsession to win the presidency, this multibillionaire has wooed a force that regards him a class enemy. (Incidentally, Gloria also forged tactical ties with the Left in the 2004 elections.)
And Villar is doing to Noynoy what Gloria did to Fernando Poe, Jr. in 2004: question the leadership qualities of his main rival.

The Villar camp attributes the gain from the latest SWS survey to "the shift in voting preference over the last three weeks in December as respondents start to put a premium on proven competence, leadership and accomplishments. " And in a televised debate that was staged immediately after the release of the SWS survey, Villar highlighted again the issue of competence and leadership.

The problem is that Villar’s propaganda on leadership will backfire.

One of the enduring quotes from Winston Churchill is: "The price of greatness is responsibility. " Villar, however, has exhibited recklessness and waste, not responsibility.

Let’s take another look at his ad where he promises free college education. If only the Philippine government were very rich in revenues, free college education would have been a viable option. But because of the severe lack of resources, the next administration must specify the priority spending. And undoubtedly, basic education must be the top priority because it has a bigger impact on poverty reduction and has higher social returns.
It is the mark of irresponsibility for Villar to promise many good things like free college education, without identifying where he will get the resources.

Villar would have a more responsive contribution to society, at the same time he would gain political capital, if he devoted the billions that he spends on ads to the housing and education projects initiated by civil society -- like Tony Meloto’s Gawad Kalinga on housing and Nene Geuvara’s Synergeia on basic education. Let an undergrad economics student calculate the opportunity costs of the billions that Villar spent for his media campaign at a very early stage of the campaign.

Villar is thus the opposite of a good leader who knows how to husband resources and use such resources efficiently.

Villar also boasts of his performance in the Senate to boost his claim of being a good leader. But let us not forget how Villar turned against the very institution that he once led as he resisted the Senate inquiry into the controversial C5 project. The C5 controversy, at the very least, exposed Villar’s conflict of interest with regard to the budget insertion.

In fact, Villar did a Gloria act by boycotting the Senate inquiry and by condemning his fellow senators for prejudging the case. This was the same way Gloria rejected the Senate in relation to the notorious ZTE-NBN deal.

At any rate, Villar is correct in making leadership a main issue in the elections. He may be a good manager, but he misses the point that what we need now is someone who will rebuild the institutions that Gloria has destroyed.
And there’s the rub. Villar’s leadership is no different from Gloria’s.

To repeat what Churchill said, "the price of greatness is responsibility. " We can also quote Dwight Eisenhower, Churchill’s ally during World War II: "The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office."

Unfortunately, Villar has neither responsibility nor integrity. He does not adhere to the ethics of honesty, uprightness, and transparency. He makes money do the talking, but he veers away from obligations, accountabilities, and tradeoffs. He is another Gloria.

Gibo Teodoro

12:39 PM

It looks like Gibo Teodoro is moving up through the polls.

Here are some photos from his Facebook fan page.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer explains why Gibo won the mock polls in Cebu.

It was also Teodoro who came out the winner in the mock polls conducted at the forum.
Out of 935 votes cast, Teodoro got 456, Aquino a far second with 296, followed by Villar (88), Gordon (45), Villanueva (29), Estrada (19) and Perlas (2).

It was noted, however, that Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, a Teodoro supporter, had brought with her the administration mayors, their relatives and staff who vastly outnumbered the crowd brought by Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes.

Only those inside the plenary hall where the forum was held were allowed to vote in the mock polls.

Here's another photo from the Gibo Teodoro fan's page on Facebook.

The campaign of course is focused on pulling down Noynoy Aquino as he is deemed to be the man to beat.

Here's a newspaper article about Noynoy Aquino from the Manila Standard Today.

The battle of slogans of the presidential candidates:
Former Defense Sec. Gibo Teodoro—“Galing at Talino”
Senator Manny Villar—“Sipag at Tiaga”
Senator Noynoy Aquino—“Mommy at Daddy”.
***

Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III’s advisers should tell him that if he gets elected president of this country in the May 2010 elections, he will be running a regular government, not the revolutionary kind that his mother ran in 1986.

Personally, I'm not for or against any candidates. I'm apathetic as I really don't see any one who is good in the list of candidates. As always in Philippine politics, we tend to choose who we think is the lesser evil.

I haven't really followed what's been going on with the candidates but here's my take so far.

Richard Gordon - maybe ok. Wag lang ma drama.

Erap - give me a break.

Eddie Villanueva - maybe but I'd rather not see religion in politics. We already have too much of that.

Manny Villar - I feel there's a lot of self interest that will happen if he wins.

Gibo Teodoro - may be qualified, my concern is whether he is a lackey of GMA or not.

Noynoy - riding on parent's bandwagon. May be qualified, but I haven't seen anything to prove it.

88 million Filipinos and these are the ones chosen to run for President. Seriously? 88 million people and these are the best they can come up with?

Ivler’s ma asks US embassy to take custody of son

Thursday, January 21, 2010 3:43 PM

From the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

==================
MANILA, Philippines—The mother of road rage murder suspect Jason Ivler said the US embassy should take custody of her son, just like what it did for erstwhile rape suspect Daniel Smith, because just like Smith, Ivler "fought for his country."

“I would like the US embassy to take him in their custody because it's their job to protect their citizens, more so my son who fought for his country,” Marlene Aguilar on Wednesday said, adding her American citizen son served in the US military and was deployed to Iraq.

Smith, a US marine soldier who, in 2006 was found guilty for the 2005 rape of a Filipino woman in Subic, Olongapo, was sneaked out of the Makati City jail and brought to the US embassy by government agents shortly after his conviction, after the Philippine government decided to comply with the provisions in the RP-US Visiting Forces Agreement, without waiting for a court ruling on the contested issue. The provisions are presumed in effect if an American soldier is sent to the Philippines during joint exercises under the RP-US VFA.

Smith was an active military personnel at the time and therefore was covered by the provisions of the VFA. If indeed Ivler had served in the US military, he is apparently not active at the moment.

But Aguilar insisted, “It's their duty to protect my son, whether they like it or not.”

The US embassy, Aguilar said, had initiated communication with them and sent some papers for Ivler to fill up.

“They want Jason to answer them personally and get the information directly from him,” Aguilar added.

She also said she would personally write a request to the US Embassy to take custody of her son.

"I'm appealing to the US Embassy for them to protect him (Ivler) from Philippine authorities," Aguilar said.

She said her son’s human rights were violated when he was arrested inside her house last January 18.

TV newscasts of the arrest showed that Ivler fired the first shot at National Bureau of Investigation agents when they found him hiding inside the stockroom of his mother’s house. He was eventually wounded, handcuffed and carried to a waiting NBI van. Footages also showed that agents had to restrain him, at times, putting their feet on him and twisting his arm to make sure he could not fight back.

Ivler was found wearing a bandolier containing ammunition for the high-powered firearms he used to try resisting arrest.

But Aguilar said NBI agents “treated him (Ivler) like an animal when he has fallen and been wounded.”

During the interview, Aguilar said her British bodyguard must have tipped off police about Ivler.

“I recognized the informant as Mark Hauser when he was interviewed on TV. He was my bodyguard for more than two years. He told NBI agents about the possibility of Jason being in the house,” Aguilar told reporters.

Aguilar added that Ivler never intended to kill the NBI agents and he would like his relatives to move on. According to his mother, he has no regrets.

Aguilar said she and her son were finally able to talk Thursday morning inside the intensive care unit of the Quirino Memorial Hospital where the suspect remained confined.

Aguilar, in her third visit to the hospital, quoted her son as saying, "I didn't want to kill any of them (NBI agents). I wanted them to kill me."

She said Ivler also told her to relay to their relatives: "Tell them to get over it."

When asked if Ivler showed any remorse for the death of Renato Ebarle Jr., the man whom he had allegedly shot dead after he failed to overtake him in traffic, Aguilar would only say, "Jason does not regret anything that's happened in his life.''
====================

Wow...this guy kills a motorist and shoots at NBI agents and he does not regret anything that happened in his life.

I hope the US doesn't take custody of him. He should rot in jail. The mother as well.

11-Year-Old Writes iPhone App, Donates Proceeds to Charity

Wednesday, January 20, 2010 1:59 PM

Saw this article on Treehugger.com.

An 11 year old boy--one who received medical care from UCLA's Medical Center and Orthopedic Hospital--has created an iPhone app benefiting children still under the facility's care.

Last year, Cameron had fallen ill and was unable to participate in his usual round of physical activities. While held up, he became overly interested in computer programming. He started reading anything he could get his hands on. He even took lessons from Stanford at Apple's iTunes U. Amazingly, he ended up teaching himself quite a few different programming languages.

His studies eventually zeroed in on Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch. And after tinkering with a few different creations, he completed a painting/drawing program called iSketch. The app was approved by Apple back in December and is now for sale.

Amazing what kids can do!

Pacquiao-Clottey rumble gets grand, glitzy kickoff

1:05 PM

From the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

==================
MANILA, Philippines—Even the fans at the stands won’t be denied seeing the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey showdown for the World Boxing Organization welterweight crown on March 13 up close.

The 5-foot-6 Filipino ring icon and his 5-foot-8 Ghanian challenger will be magnified as 70-footers on the world’s largest high definition television when they battle it out at the $1.2-billion Cowboys’ Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Billionaire Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys and co-promoter of the first boxing bout at the world’s biggest domed stadium, put up a grand kickoff press conference for “The Event” Tuesday in Arlington, with pompom-waving cheerleaders, former boxing champions and former Super Bowl winners in attendance.

No wonder, Pacquiao, Clottey and promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank gushed over the 80,000-seat facility that would be reconfigured to accommodate 40,000 fight fans close to the way it was during the lavish news conference emceed by Michael Buffer.

“I feel really good about this (fight),” said Pacquiao. “The fans will like what we’ll do in the ring come March 13.

“It’s going to be a good fight,” Pacquiao added. “Clottey, he is a good fighter, a top fighter, and he is bigger than me. I have to prepare hard for this fight and train hard and focus.”

Clottey was equally magnanimous.

“This is going to be a hell of a fight,” Clottey said. “I love Manny Pacquiao. If you throw (punches) at him, he will throw them back at you. I know what I’m going to face.”

Both Pacquiao, the pound-for-pound king, and Clottey, ranked No. 1 by the WBO and No. 4 by the World Boxing Association, were presented football jerseys with their names on the back by Jones. Pacquiao had No. 3 on his jersey and Clottey No. 13 to signify the date of their fight.

In the same presser, Pacquiao did not discount the possibility that his megabuck duel with Floyd Mayweather Jr., originally set March 13 before it was cancelled due to differences in drug-testing protocol, may push through later this year.

“For me, I wanted to fight him, but he had a lot of reasons,” Pacquiao said.

Renowned trainer Freddie Roach, however, insists Clottey presents a better match-up for Pacquiao as the Ghanaian is going to fight and not run like Mayweather.

Arum continued to be smitten by the stadium chosen to host the NBA All-Star game next month and the Super Bowl next year.

“I have never, ever seen anything like it,” Arum said. “There is nothing in the world like this place. It just blows you away.”

“Amazing. I feel like I’m a football player,” Pacquiao said after entering the stadium through a smoke-filled tunnel and a gauntlet of shapely cheerleaders.

The 31-year-old Pacquiao, the only boxer to snare seven world titles in as many weight divisions, holds a 50-3-2 ring record with 38 KOs. Clottey, 33, has a mark of 35-3 with 21 KOs.

Meanwhile, tickets for “The Event” will go on sale on Jan. 23. Prices range from $700, $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50. With reports from AP, AFP and Reuters

Key sentence in that report, "Renowned trainer Freddie Roach, however, insists Clottey presents a better match-up for Pacquiao as the Ghanaian is going to fight and not run like Mayweather." Hahaha...

New Robbery Method used in Ladies' Restroom

1:01 PM

I got this from an e-mail and I don't know if this is true, but it doesn't hurt to be careful.

==================

Ladies...please take care!

New theft technique. Just received this latest theft technique used by robbers. It seems feasible so take heed.

Warning to all the ladies out there; and men please inform your significant other. (And, hey, it could happen to the guys!)

The Latest Scam: Robbing Females using the restroom/ladies bathroom at a Shopping Mall...

The way the scam works, a man slips into a women's rest room and sneaks into a unit. He waits until there is only one woman in the restroom in a neighboring unit/stall.

The criminal then stands on the toilet seat and points a hand gun into the next unit/stall, demanding the woman's valuables. After getting her cash and jewellery, he demands that she removes all of her clothing and kicks them out of the unit/stall. The thief tosses the clothing into a shopping bag, hangs an 'out of order sign' on the restroom door outside, and slips back into the mall. The 'out of order sign' ensures no one will soon come to the woman's rescue. It usually takes an hour or two for the woman to work up the nerve to leave the rest room in the nude, giving the criminal ample time to make his get away. The woman is left naked humiliated in a mall full of strangers.

The best defense, says police, is to never go into a shopping mall restroom alone, as only women who are by themselves are targeted.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW.

This has so far been a nearly perfect crime, as none of the perpetrators have been caught.

Don't let this happen to another woman.
