What happened 13 Days After Pacquiao's Fight With Mosley?

Monday, May 30, 2011 3:15 PM

If you remember, I posted this before about natural disasters that happen 13 days after a Pacquiao Fight?

Well, this is not exactly 13 days, but Manny Pacquiao fought Shane Mosley on May 7, 2011. On May 26, Typhoon Chedeng entered the Philippines killing 3 people in May! In the middle of summer. We don't usually get typhoons in the Philippines until July.

Not only that, just today, over 800 tons of milk fish or bangus died near Taal volcano.

Of course, the closest thing that happened on the 13th day could be Manny Pacquiao's support against the RH Bill :)

Maybe we should ask Pacquiao to stop fighting for the sake of the country.

800 Tons of Milk Fish Die On Taal Lake

11:17 AM

From The Examiner.

More than 800 tons of milk fish or locally known as bangus died in a lake near Taal Volcano.

Authorities blame the deaths on sudden temperature drop. Officials have banned the sale of the rotting fish, which are being buried by the truckload in Talisay and three other towns in Batangas province, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources official Rose del Mundo said Sunday.

Catholic Church Calls for Tax Boycott Over RH Bill

Monday, May 16, 2011 5:18 PM

The Philippine Catholic Church leaders has called on their members to boycott tax payment as a form of protest against the RH Bill.

The Citizens Alliance for the Protection of Human Life has threatened to mount civil disobedience by not paying their taxes if the reproductive health bill is enacted into law.

Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago said that "protesters going on civil disobedience by refusing to pay taxes must be prepared to end up in the slammer."

President Aquino warned this was seditious. Catholic bishops said they would rather risk jail time than drop their opposition to the measure.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it that the church doesn't pay any taxes? I don't know if priests pay taxes, but if they don't, how can they call on their followers to break the law and risk going to jail when they in turn risk nothing? That's quite unfair isn't it?

I understand the Catholic Church's need to defend their stance on the RH Bill, but their arguments and threats are bordering on ridiculous.

I thought there should be a separation of the church and the state?

If the church insist on having a say in how Philippine law is crafted, perhaps they should start paying their fair share of taxes. Isn't it unfair for everyone else that one of the biggest voice that shape Philippine politics pay no tax? Meanwhile, every Juan and Maria who pay taxes have no voice in the shaping of their lives?

Manila, Philippines - Then and Now

1:18 PM

For all of you who love nostalgia. I found a couple of videos comparing old Manila to the New Manila. In some cases, the difference is astonishing.

You know what's the saddest part about the change? The fact that new Manila is way more dirtier and the haphazard erection of electrical post and wires around the city that literally destroyed the view of the skyline.

Can you also imagine how many historical building the country has? How is it maintained now? The history and story behind all the historical buildings in the country can be compared to the history of Spain, Italy and France. But for some reason, Filipino just seem to hate old things and always want something new.

Cost of Education

Friday, May 13, 2011 11:57 PM

Just read this today.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) announced that 300 colleges and universities will increase their tuition fees this school year.

The CHED also said that 8 out of 10 high school graduates will not be able to go to college.

I've heard from friends that the tuition fee for De La Salle right now is about P100,000 per year for Computer Science.

I've also read that UST 4th year Med students pay around P200,000 for their tuition.

It seems that education now is really only for the rich. Private elementary and high school runs between P20,000 to P100,000 per year depending on which school you go to.

Sure, there's free public schools, but the quality is so bad, you wonder what they teach there.

It's really difficult for today's youth to get ahead in life. Companies tend to hire students who graduated from the top schools like UP, De La Salle, Ateneo and UP. But the tuition fees for these are so high, it's almost impossible to afford.

But if you don't go to these school, the chances of you getting hired in a good company is pretty much impossible. What you get is a chicken and egg situation.

What do you think should be done to improve access to higher education in the Philippines?

Aikido Weapons Training

Tuesday, May 10, 2011 11:20 PM

Have you ever seen a Steven Seagal movie? Of course you have. Do you know what kind of martial arts Steven Seagal uses? It's called Aikido.

Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba as a synthesis of his martial studies, philosophy, and religious beliefs.

Aikido is performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. This requires very little physical strength, as the aikidōka (aikido practitioner) "leads" the attacker's momentum using entering and turning movements. The techniques are completed with various throws or joint locks. Aikido can be categorized under the general umbrella of grappling arts.

See this demonstration by Steven Seagal on the Merv Griffin show.

I really loved watching Steven Seagal when I was younger. Then I saw this movie where he was using a weapon.

I wanted to learn how to use a weapon like that. There was also this movie he made called Marked for Death where he was using a sword. That was awesome.

Unfortunately, there was hardly any school at that time that I can find that teaches that kind of Aikido. The closest I found was Combat Aikido that's now called Tapondo.

Anyway, it's really quite amazing to watch a full Aikido demonstration which I've seen several times thanks to Youtube. But it's very rare to see anyone use Aikido with a weapon. I've seen books that teaches how to use weapons in Aikido, but I've never seen a school in the Philippines that teaches Aikido weapons training.

I'm sure there are schools that teaches Budo or other weapons like Arnis. But I've seen someone use a weapon using Aikido and it was just a beautiful sight to see.

Last week I came upon a site that teaches traditional Aikido with weapons training. It's called Iwama ryu Aikido.

Iwama ryu is the style of aikido that was taught at Iwama dojo (in Iwama) by the founder of aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, and especially the lineage passed on through Morihiro Saito, a close disciple who was given responsibility over Iwama dojo by Ueshiba.

Iwama style includes the combined study (riai) of traditional Japanese weapons (bukiwaza), specifically Aiki-jō (staff) and Aiki-ken (sword), and of empty-handed aikido (taijutsu). Iwama practitioners often claim that their aikido is closest to that of the founder, as preserved by Morihiro Saito.

Look at this demonstration of Iwama Aikido and compare it to what Steven Seagal is doing. Watch until the middle to see the weapons demonstration.

Here's a report on Iwama Aikido in Japan with Morihiro Saito and his song Hitohira Saito. I don't understand Japanese so don't ask me what they're saying. I just like watching the weapons demonstration.

If you're interested in knowing more about Iwama Aikido. Check out the Iwama Aikido Philippines Facebook Page.

They post regular updates on the Iwama style Aikido techniques. Based on what I read, it's the closest form of Aikido to the original created by the founder O'Sensei Morihei Ueshiba.

Sony's PSN Was Running Without A Firewall

Thursday, May 05, 2011 4:58 PM

The big news about a massive security breach at Sony's PSN exposing the personal info of 77 million members just gets better and better.

For a background, PSN is Sony's PlayStation Network where users of the PS3 can connect to play with each other. You put in your personal info and credit card info as well to buy other titles.

There was a breach in their servers and 77 million members info was exposed to the hackers.

The problem was, not only was Sony not very forthcoming with that information at first. It took them several days before explaining why PSN was offline and two more days before it confirmed the security breach.

Sony said the attack happened between April 1 and April 19 into its servers in San Diego. But the vulnerability that the attacker was able to exploit was also known.

The information on the servers were the names, birthday, address, password and credit card info. Sony said that the credit card info were encrypted but the rest are not. Password are not exactly encrypted but where transformed using a cryptographic hash function.

Sony said that only 10 million customers have entered their credit card info.

But the story gets better. News has came out recently that Sony was actually using outdated software on its servers.

Security experts learned months ago that Sony was using outdated version of the Apache Web Server that was unpatched and had no firewalls installed.

Sony is just digging itself into a big hole and is really alienating users. First the Rootkit which was a really invasive copy-protection scheme that modified users computers which could make a user's computer susceptible to attack. Then not informing users of the PSN attack right away and now finding out that the servers were not even protected.

Would Sony recover from all this mess? Sure, in time. They have enough money to ride it out and hopefully fix all of these. In the meantime, they are facing a huge lawsuit.

Electric Post In The Middle Of The Road

Monday, May 02, 2011 4:29 PM

I got a lot of comments about the photos I posted of Old Manila in the 1950's. A lot of peopled loved it and wished we could bring it back.

Well, I'm sad to say that I highly doubt we'll ever see Old Manila again. Case in point.

If you're asking "Is that an electric post in the middle of the road?" Yes, that's right. Of all the stupid things people do, they built an electric post in the middle of the road!

Don't ask me how you get to the other side of the post with a car. They just build whatever they want, whenever they want. Sadly, that's just the way it is now in the Philippines.

So if you're wondering if Manila will ever go back to where it was in the 1950's. Don't bother, it won't.
