Samboy Lim Highlights

Filed Under: pba, Philippines, samboy lim, san miguel |0 commentsSamboy "The Skywalker" Lim was considered the Michael Jordan of the PBA for his hang time.
The best memory I had of Samboy Lim was when I was in school and was eating at Jollibee with my friend and he walked in with and sat behind us. And man, did he eat a lot. We ordered one champ and drink, he had like 6 Jollibee burger steak and drinks. Too bad I got too shy to ask for an autograph.

We switched ERs for Gloria Arroyo’
11:14 AM
Filed Under: philippine daily inquirer, Philippines |0 commentsI just read this story from the Inquirer about the cheating in the 2004 election. It's interesting, but not surprising.
A police officer and his “boys” have come forward saying they stole original election returns (ERs) then kept at the Batasang Pambansa building and replaced these with fake ones to make sure Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo would still emerge the winner of the 2004 presidential election in the event of a recount.
Senior Supt. Rafael Santiago, now assigned at the Philippine National Police Directorate for Operations in Camp Crame, presented to the Inquirer envelopes bearing the seal of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and containing what he said were original ERs from various areas in Mindanao.
Prior to his appointment in Camp Crame, Santiago was relieved as police director of Zambales province.
At a meeting on Tuesday evening attended by Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and Inquirer editors and reporters, Santiago described their coming out as “providential.”
“After I was relieved as Zambales police director, I realized now is the time to come out and tell the truth. I expect there would be mudslinging [against] me, I would be accused of sour graping, and there would be threats because we are going against a powerful man. But I am ready to face it and tell what we know,” he said.

Best Guards Of The NBA
12:11 PM
Filed Under: basketball, nba |0 commentsI came upon these videos on Youtube. I remember watching them in the 1990's. I believe those were the best times in the NBA with marquee players like Michael Jordan, Isiah Thomas, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Dominique Wilkins.
No flash, no big ego, no big paychecks. Just pure love of the game and team rivalry. It was also the time when players acted maturely on and off the court. They don't go out and specifically market themselves for money. It's not that way anymore. Players now worry more about their rep than actually working to win a championship.
These guys are an inspiration to watch and you want to be like them when you play.
Isiah Thomas of the Detroit Pistons.
Earving "Magic" Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers.
And of course, the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT), Michael "Air" Jordan.

Sipa
Wednesday, July 20, 2011 4:12 PM
Filed Under: Philippines, Sipa, sports |0 commentsWhen I was in school, we were taught that Sipa is the national sports of the Philippines. We used to play that a lot during recess and after school hitting a metal washer with thick strands of threads.
Here's a video how we used to play it.
The actual national sport consist of two or four players on each side of a net kicking a rattan ball. It's also called Sepak Takraw in other parts of Southeast Asia.
Here's what it looks like.
This is what the ball looks like.
It's unfortunate that the Philippine sports authorities have never really embraced this sports preferring to promote basketball and pretty much only basketball. There are a lot of sports Filipinos can excel in but they can't because of lack of funding and promotion.
In 2007, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero Tuesday urged the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to consider the revival of the Philippine National Games (PNG). But I don't think anything came out of it.

Tagalog Na Tunay
10:17 AM
Filed Under: jokes, pinoy |0 commentsA young, good-looking representative from Laguna sponsored a bill recommending Filipino language be used in all levels of accounting firms and banking institutions. The solon claimed it will provide a better understanding of the business transactions for those who are inexperienced and non-English speaking citizens.
The bill received unanimous approval from the House and was presented to the President for signature to become the law of the land. But in spite of the overwhelming pressure from the members of Congress, President Gloria Arroyo vetoed the bill.
Why? She found out that when the English "business" words are translated in Tagalog, they sound very malicious and are "nakaka-hiya at nakaka-kilabot!"
Here are a few sample words - English to Tagalog
Asset - Ari
Fixed Asset - Nakatirik na ari
Liquid Asset - Basang ari
Solid Asset - Matigas na ari
Owned Asset - Sariling pag-aari
Other Asset - Ari ng iba
False Asset - Ari-ari-an
Miscellaneous Asset - Iba-ibang klaseng ari
Asset Write off - Pinutol na pagaari
Depreciation of Asset - Laspag na pag-aari
Fully Depreciated Asset - Laspag na laspag na pag-aari
Earning asset - Tumutubong pag-aari
Working Asset - Ganado pa ang ari
Non-earning Asset - Baldado na ang ari
Erroneous Entry - Mali ang pagkaka-pasok
Double Entry - Dalawang beses ipinasok
Multiple Entry - Labas pasok nang labas pasok
Correcting Entry - Itinama ang pagpasok
Reversing Entry - Baligtad ang pagkakapasok
Dead Asset - Patay na ang ARI

Most Dangerous Bird in the World
Monday, July 18, 2011 4:53 PM

In short, this bird can kill you and the San Diego Zoo calls it the most dangerous bird in the world. Their claws are capable of causing serious injuries, if not death.
They're like the modern day equivalent of a velociraptor.

Davao Mayor Duterte Punches Sheriff During Demolition of Shanties
Monday, July 04, 2011 4:13 PM
Filed Under: Davao City, Philippines, politicians |0 commentsThe mayor of Davao City Sara Duterte had ordered the demolition of a slum area in the city to be delayed amid clashes between residents and police.
When she discovered this order was being disobeyed, she decided to lash out at a court official and sheriff who happened to be at hand. She repeatedly punched the Sheriff of the Davao Regional Trial Court, Abe Andres during the demolition.
I guess this makes her really popular with her constituents. But what about the Sheriff who's just doing his job? Poor guy, he can't win. He gets punched in the face, but he can't retaliate because she's a woman and she's the mayor. Whatever he does, he loses. Look at the guys holding the Sheriff, he can't even fight back.
No win situation for Abe Andres. He's the bad guy because he's the one supervising the demolition. If he files a complaint in court, he'll lose anyway because you can never win against the mayor. Meanwhile, Mayor Sara Duterte comes out the hero for trying to save the squatters who are of course, illegally squatting but are big voters.
