I just saw this on the Philippine Star. Looks like the fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is finally going to happen.
MANILA, Philippines - Floyd Mayweather Jr. wants the fight against Manny Pacquiao, and said the ball is now in the hands of the Filipino superstar.
The undefeated American finally broke his silence following reports or speculations that negotiations are on for the great showdown between him and Pacquiao.
Mayweather said on Twitter he’s hoping for the fight to happen on May 5. He said he can sign the contract anytime, and expects Pacquiao to follow.
“May 5, 2012,” was his latest tweet as of 4 p.m. yesterday (Manila time).
He must be looking forward to the day he gets to fight Pacquiao and finally provide the answer as to who the greatest boxer of this era is.
Some consider Pacquiao as the reigning pound-for-pound champion, and the others consider Mayweather as the best, considering Pacquiao’s performance against Juan Manuel Marquez last Nov. 12.
Mayweather yesterday sounded like he can’t wait for the fight to finally happen.
And if it does, there’s no other place to do it than Las Vegas. Mayweather should be the favorite as well, and betting lines already have him at -140, and Pacquiao at +110.
“I’ve been told May 5 is open,” Mayweather was quoted in a CNN article.
“Losing is in Pacquiao’s mind because he lost just last week. He lost to Marquez three times. May 5 is the date, sign the contract, I’m waiting,” he said.
Pacquiao barely got past Marquez when Mayweather breezed past the Mexican in 2009. Pacquiao said Mayweather must have seen the fight that he is no longer afraid to face him.
“Nakita niya siguro yung laban ko kay Marquez kaya hindi na siya takot (He must’ve seen my fight against Marquez that’s why he’s not scared of me anymore),” said Pacquiao.
Mayweather is 34 and Pacquiao is turning 33. Boxing chronicler Michael Marley said the other day both fighters must have realized they’re getting old, and should do the fight now.
“I can’t be sitting waiting all day, you want to fight let’s make it happen. I’m here. I’m waiting. What’s going on? I can sign today. If I sign today you better sign tomorrow,” Mayweather said.
“You said you’re a clean athlete and you said you’d take the test so let’s do it,” added Mayweather.
The fight that should break all existing records in boxing, from fight purse to pay-per-view sales, came close to happening twice, but for so many reasons it never did.
The drug-testing procedure stood in between the two fighters, but Top Rank’s Bob Arum said it’s no longer an issue this time, if and when negotiations formally resume.
It’s more about the purse split, and again, with all the money on the table, experts think there’s no reason why both camps can’t find ways to make the fight happen.
“I hope that fight does happen. I think it would be the best fight in the world and I would love to see it,” said Pacquiao’s chief trainer, Freddie Roach.
Moments after Pacquiao defeated Marquez, the reigning WBO welterweight champion called Mayweather’s name.
“Let’s get it on. Make the fight happen and let’s give people a good fight,” Pacquiao said on top of the ring.
Yes, finally, it could happen.

Grandmother Aurelia Matias teaches Facebook users, TV viewers ‘true love’
Wednesday, November 23, 2011 5:04 PM
Filed Under: facebook, love |0 commentsFrom the Inquirer.
In return, the 78-year-old woman taught them a lesson about love.
Aurelia Matias’ poignant quest to find her beloved Luis, 78, who had been missing for weeks in the streets of Manila, captured the imagination of thousands after a street photographer snapped her picture and posted it on Facebook (FB).
It quickly went viral as more than 60,000 Facebook users shared, reposted and retweeted the black-and-white photo showing a bespectacled Lola Aurelia, her back facing the camera with the missing person poster pinned to her dress.
With the help of big TV networks covering the unfolding story, a search was launched. Finally, on Tuesday evening, Lola Aurelia found Lolo Luis in a dramatic reunion near the Quirino station of the Light Railway Transit on Taft Avenue.
“Many thanks to the many people helping me. They did not let me down,” she said in an interview aired over “24 Oras,” the evening newscast of GMA network.
“First to God. I know all the people who helped me, God gave you to me,” Lola Aurelia said.
Campaign starts
The online campaign to find Lolo Luis began on Monday with a picture posted on Facebook by “Reddie Js,” a street photography enthusiast.
“I saw this old woman sitting by herself yesterday at the corner of Buendia and Roxas Boulevard,” he said in a note that accompanied the photo.
“Surprised to see a sheet of bond paper pinned in front and the back of her dress with a picture of a missing old man, I asked her about it and she said it was her husband who had been missing for two weeks now,” he added.
“I was touched by her integrity and was pained to see her looking for him in that manner so I decided to help her, too. I asked permission to post her picture here in FB to be shared by others as help for finding Mr. Luis Matias,” Reddie said.
The photo drew dozens of comments, mostly expressing support and vowing to help spread the story.
A Facebook user named Allan Du Yaphockun wrote: “My parents (have) been married for 57 years before my father passed away last August. My mother still misses my father so much. It pains me to see a situation like this. Although I am far from Manila. I would comment, like and share this to show concern and spread the search.”
So touching
Another, Charmaine Santiago Dee So, said the photograph was so touching it made her cry. “Hope she finds lolo soonest as I can feel her pain. I know God will bless them both and he will find a way,” she posted.
On Wednesday, Reddie expressed joy that Lolo Luis had been found. He thanked everyone who helped, including the GMA and ABS-CBN networks, whose “big machinery,” energized the search, as well as all Facebook users who circulated the picture.
But he said he was most grateful to Lola Aurelia: “Your extravagant way of showing how you love your husband so much that you would go thru such depths of even wearing the posters on your dress was the reason I noticed you,” he wrote.
“It caught my eye, and my heart! That is the simplest reason why you found Lolo again! The picture I took of you is the best picture I know I’ll cherish forever. It is a picture of ‘Love.’ Maraming maraming salamat po (Thanks a lot) Lola!” Reddie said.
Tears for love
Journalist Kara David, who personally joined Lola Aurelia in her search, said she couldn’t help but shed tears as she listened to Lola Aurelia describe her love for her husband.
“I had to ask the cameraman to zoom in to Lola because I didn’t want the camera to catch me crying,” she said in a phone interview.
“What she showed was unconditional love. She was saying, ‘I don’t want to just see him again, but I want to serve him. I want to serve him still.’ For me, that was a huge lesson about love,” David said.
She said she felt a sense of “community spirit” in the search for Lolo Luis as strangers sent text messages with information about his possible whereabouts, or just simple greetings of best wishes and good luck.
“This is one situation when we saw how social media can be used for something good, and that social media can be a tool for compassion, not just for bullying, or spreading destructive lies or jokes,” she said.
Trending topic
On Tuesday evening, “Lola Aurelia and Lolo Luis” became one of the top “trending topics” on Twitter worldwide, as netizens posted comments on the couple’s moving reunion.
David said Lola Aurelia’s story was a “jewel” among missing persons’ stories because of the kind of person she is.
“She is such an endearing person; she is not your ordinary person. Here you have an elderly woman who will walk long distances to look for her husband. That’s the reason this story became such a hit,” she said.
False alarms
After several false alarms and various trips around Metro Manila when the information sent via text message or online turned out to be false, David said a concerned citizen eventually sent a tip that someone who looked like Lolo Luis was spotted near the Quirino LRT station.
By then David said she had left to file her story at the GMA offices in Quezon City. “What I did was to leave my cameraman and my driver with Lola Aurelia so they could check out the other places,” she said.
Which is why she was not on the scene during the actual reunion. “I didn’t mind because the story wasn’t about me. It was about Lola Aurelia and Lolo Luis,” she said.
David said there was no “network war” involved in the coverage of Lola Aurelia’s story, and she even credited ABS-CBN as being the first to interview her on Tuesday.
But she said GMA just “got lucky” since her cameraman happened to be with Lola Aurelia for the latter half of the day till early evening when Lolo Luis was finally found, resulting in 24 Oras’ exclusive footage of the reunion. With a report from Lawrence de Guzman, Inquirer Research

Maid who poisons employers bolts jail
10:39 AM
Filed Under: crime, Philippines |0 commentsFrom the Philippine Star.
MANILA, Philippines - A woman convicted of poisoning then robbing 10 families she worked for as a maid has escaped from the Women’s Correctional facility Saturday, a police official told The STAR yesterday.
Senior Superintendent Nelson Yabut, who arrested Anamae Livrando in 2008 after she poisoned eight Filipino-Chinese families in Binondo, said operatives of the Women’s Correctional recovery unit have asked his assistance in tracking down the convict after she was discovered missing in her cell.
“I was informed that Anamae was able to scale the high wall of the penitentiary and escape unnoticed,” Yabut said.
Livrando, dubbed by the police as “Poison Ivy,” also escaped from the Manila City Jail, where she was detained while her cases of frustrated homicide and robbery were being tried following her arrest.
She was rearrested by Quezon City policemen in August 2011 after she poisoned two more families and was convicted for multiple cases of frustrated homicide and robbery.
Livrando’s modus operandi is to befriend security guards of high-end condominium buildings and later asked them to vouch for her character in applying as housemaid to her intended victims.
Once employed, she would mix poison in the food she prepares for the family and other helpers in the house. She then steals her employers’ possessions while they are in the hospital.
During her first arrest in Binondo, she refused to reveal what type of poison she put in her victims’ food. One of her victims, a child of a prominent Filipino-Chinese couple, almost died.
Yabut, however, refused to comment on Livrando’s escapes from the two jail facilities but warned families to be wary in accepting housemaids.
“People should scrutinize the character of persons applying as housemaids. If possible try to secure police or NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) clearance from them. Now that Poison Ivy is on the loose again we are afraid that she will victimize innocent families,” Yabut said.
Arroyo Faces More Troubles

Filed Under: Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Philipines |0 commentsArroyo, who is under hospital arrest in Taguig City on charges of electoral sabotage, is also facing plunder charges in the Office of the Ombudsman.
A lawmaker and two other complainants said that while Arroyo had been charged with electoral sabotage, there was still a need to make her accountable for alleged acts of corruption during her nine-year tenure in Malacañang.
The three asked the Office of the Ombudsman on Monday to immediately resolve the plunder case against Arroyo over the scuttled $329-million National Broadband Network (NBN) deal.
Harry Roque, who represents the kin of 13 media workers and two bystanders slain in the massacre on Nov. 23, 2009, said his clients would ask the Quezon City Regional Trial Court to order the former President to pay a total of P15 million in damages.
“We will file a civil case against her for her complicity in the Maguindanao massacre. She is responsible for coddling and abetting those behind the killings and for violating the rights of the victims,” Roque said in an interview.
The massacre claimed the lives of 58 people, including 33 media workers, two years ago.
