3 Cost Effective Ways to Solve Metro Manila's Traffic Problem

The Facebook page of ANC 24/7 is asking for its reader's suggestion on how to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem.

This got me thinking, "what is the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem?" It's easy to make suggestions, what's hard is the implementation and the cost of implementation. So what is the the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem and the most cost effective solution?

Punitive Fines
First of all, any implementation will definitely cost money, a lot of money. The cause of the traffic mess is the people themselves so it's only right that those causing the traffic problem should be fined and the fine should hurt. That way, the fines will pay for the cost of enforcing the law.
The fines should start at P500 and goes up every week if you don't pay it within 15 days. To enforce this and prevent people from ignoring the fine. It will be tied to their driver's license or car registration. They cannot renew their d…

Tricorder Project

If you love Star Trek, you'll love this. Dr. Peter Jansen has developed a device that is modeled after the Tricorder.

He began his work in 2007 and he aims to make it easy for others to reproduce his designs. He has full schematics on his website and they are available under TAPR non-commercial hardware license.

The Mark 2 version runs on Debian Linux and the underlying source code is available under GPL.

The tricorder measures temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, magnetic fields, color, ambient light level, GPS location and distance to surface.

Check out this amazing device on this video.

The Bekiry - A Gay Inspired Business

The Bekiry (not bakery) is a business started by a couple of friends who needed money to go to Boracay. The cupcake names are inspired by "becky" or gay as the Filipino gay linggo goes. They have a cupcake called the "Red Velveloosh" with a tag line "That time of the month" and others called iREESEStable (Reese's) and "Chenes and cream" for cookies and cream.

The bakers are called "bekers" and the customers are called "chostomers".

Here's a sample of their menu.
Here's their site on Facebook.

Beware Of Kidnappers

I just read saw this from a friend's Facebook post.

Yesterday afternoon, my wife, son and Yaya went to buy some groceries at a supermarket in Sucat and while my wife was lining up to pay, Yaya and my son went to the “Funhouse” arcade near the food court. While my son was playing with a video game, a suspicious bald man, around 5’10”, with medium built and decent clothing approached yaya and was instructing her to give a piece of paper to my wife and leave my son with him. Yaya refused to follow his instruction so he insisted by bribing her with money. She continued to refuse with a louder voice which drew attention so the man walked away.
She immediately told my wife what happened and when they were about to go home, they saw him exiting the supermarket. Before they could point him out, he got into his car and drove away.

We reported the incident and they allowed us to view their surveillance cams. There we clearly saw that from the time yaya and my son entered the arcade, the ma…

Jeremy Lin - Knicks vs Sixers March 21, 2012

The New York Knicks' revival under coach Mike Woodson is turning the Atlantic Division into a three-team race.

The Philadelphia 76ers would prefer to keep that from happening.

The Knicks look to cut further into the 76ers' lead atop the Atlantic when the rivals meet for the final time this season Wednesday night at Wells Fargo Center.

New York (22-24) seemed to be fading as recently as a week ago, when a six-game skid dropped the club seven games behind Philadelphia and 4 1/2 back of second-place Boston, prompting coach Mike D'Antoni's resignation.

With Woodson at the helm, the Knicks have since won four in a row by an average of 22.5 points including Tuesday's 106-87 home victory over Toronto. Suddenly, New York is within four games of the Sixers and 2 1/2 of the Celtics.

Knicks win 82-79.

Jeremy Lin - Knicks vs Raptors March 20, 2012

Linsanity had nearly reached its peak when Jeremy Lin hit a game-winning 3-pointer to defeat the Toronto Raptors last month.

While the hoopla surrounding Lin has since cooled a bit, interim coach Mike Woodson is starting to create a buzz of his own.

After New York's brutal losing stretch, Woodson seems to have the Knicks back on track and will look to stay undefeated when the Raptors visit Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.

Mike D'Antoni resigned two days after the Knicks (21-24) suffered their sixth straight defeat March 12. A change at the top seems to have a made a world of difference for New York, which finds itself 3-0 under Woodson.

After blowing out Portland 121-79 in Woodson's first game Wednesday, the Knicks completed a home-and-home sweep of Indiana with Saturday's 102-88 road win.

The New York Knicks are playing with renewed vigor under Mike Woodson. Their defense has been top notched today against the Toronto Raptors. Carmelo Anthony looks …

Jeremy Lin’s Star Not Fading Off Court

From MarketWatch.
Knicks guard’s jersey is NBA’s top seller since February
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — For his aunt’s first-ever New York Knicks game last Wednesday, Antonio Yu shelled out $560 for a pair of tickets, and, to be certain they were appropriately dressed for the occasion, he paid $250 apiece for two officially licensed Jeremy Lin jerseys.

While the atmosphere of “Linsanity” surrounding the point-guard phenom may have died down somewhat on the hardwood, on the commercial side there still appears to be plenty of passion.

During Wednesday night’s win over the Portland Trail Blazers at Madison Square Garden, which snapped a six-game Knicks losing streak, many fans were donned No. 17 jerseys and T-shirts, some of them waving posters saying “Lincredible” and “Bal-Lin’.”

Lin merchandise dominated the Knicks concession stands and featured prominently in in-store displays.

Since Lin’s Feb. 4 breakout game, sales at online Knicks-linked stores — which carry about 50 Lin-related items —…

Jeremy Lin - Knicks vs Pacers March 16, 2012

The New York Knicks won for the 2nd straight game after their former coach Mike D'Antoni resigned on Wednesday. They beat the Pacers 115 - 100.

Jeremy Lin made 13 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assist, Carmelo made 12 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assist while J.R. Smith made 16 points. It was pretty balanced scoring for most of the Knicks and all players got to play again. At one point, the Knicks were up by 30 points before the Pacers narrowed the lead down to 15 points.

So I've created a new blog dedicated to basketball only so I can limit this Pala-isip blog to things about the Philippines and what I think...not that anybody cares :)

Anyway, the new blog is called The Hoop Diaries. I hope you subscribe to it and visit often for highlights, game and training videos as well as some stuff about basketball I'll be writing. I've also set up the format so that the videos are larger.

I will continue to post stuff about basketball here, but it will mostly be about Philippine basketball.

Jeremy Lin - Knicks vs Blazers March 14, 2012

In a stunning turn of events, Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni resigned today shocking both his bosses and the players. Mike Woodson has been placed as Interim Head Coach.

The Knicks finally worked together using Coach D'Antoni's offensive system. Mike Woodson has experience trying to turn around a struggling team when he spent six years in Atlanta.

The Knicks won 121-79. Jeremy Lin finished with 6 points, 6 assist and 6 turnovers. Anthony finished with 16 points, Stoudemire with 17 points while J.R. Smith finished with 23 and Novak with 20.

They finally used Mike Bibby on the rotation as guard and everyone on the Knicks team got to play. This is the first time in a long time since Mike Bibby was used as Mike D'Antoni usually sticks with using only a few players in his rotation.

Here are the highlights.

Here's the halftime report.
