3 Cost Effective Ways to Solve Metro Manila's Traffic Problem

The Facebook page of ANC 24/7 is asking for its reader's suggestion on how to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem.

This got me thinking, "what is the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem?" It's easy to make suggestions, what's hard is the implementation and the cost of implementation. So what is the the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem and the most cost effective solution?

Punitive Fines
First of all, any implementation will definitely cost money, a lot of money. The cause of the traffic mess is the people themselves so it's only right that those causing the traffic problem should be fined and the fine should hurt. That way, the fines will pay for the cost of enforcing the law.
The fines should start at P500 and goes up every week if you don't pay it within 15 days. To enforce this and prevent people from ignoring the fine. It will be tied to their driver's license or car registration. They cannot renew their d…

The Pain of Damaso by Father Robert Reyes

An insightful writing by Father Robert Reyes. Here's an excerpt.

Padre Damaso of Noli and Fili fame is a black eye to the Philippine Church then as well as today. To be a priest and called Damaso is not so pleasant to say the very least. Carlos Celdran’s creative protest in front the altar of the Manila Cathedral against the Church’s position on the RH Bill has now earned him the verdict of guilty and a jail sentence of more than a year.

I will not go into either the merits of the case or prolong the discussion on the RH Bill, I wish to go through the multi-tiered pain represented by the name Damaso.

Is Carlos Celdran in pain? Yes, but not in the way that others may understand. I know him and he is a friend. He is a bona-fide citizen of the Republic of the Philippines. We have shared much about the excesses of the Catholic Church long before he ever thought of his “Damaso act” in the Manila Cathedral. Carlos’ pain is that of a Catholic who ask questions and seeks answers …

Fil-Ams laud Obama’s good news for 1M Filipinos

From the Inquirer.

LOS ANGELES—“This is the year, this is the moment, this is history.”

Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Filipino-American journalist, posted this on Facebook as he sat in the front row at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas where US President Barack Obama announced on Tuesday an overhaul of the US immigration laws.

Vargas, who is undocumented, has been promoting the passage of the Dream Act and has become a popular public figure in a national campaign for immigration reform in the United States.

“We welcome this positive development that brings hope to the more than one million undocumented Filipinos in the US,” said Arturo P. Garcia, one of the Fil-Am members of People’s Core Immigrant Rights and Advocacy Services who gathered at La Placita Methodist Church in Los Angeles to watch a live telecast of Obama’s speech.

Ladies and gentlemen, good evening. Thank you very much for having me here tonight to open the Ad Congress. I know how important this event is for our marketing and advertising colleagues. My people get very excited and go into a panic, every other year, at this time.

I would like to talk about my life, entrepreneurship, and globalization. I would like to talk about how we can become a great nation.

You may wonder how one is connected to the other, but I promise that, as there is truth in advertising, the connection will come.

Let me begin with a story I have told many times. My own.

I was born to a rich Chinese-Filipino family. I spent my childhood in Cebu where my father owned a chain of movie houses, including the first air-conditioned…

Group of Men Harassing Motorist Near NAIA 1

Reposting this from Jenki Galindo-Fernando Facebook page.

Beware of these men... Around 9am last friday, naghatid kami sa airport.

Bulgarian Politician | Failed Assassination Attempt

The leader of Bulgaria's opposition Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Ahmet Dogan, escaped an apparent assassination attempt Saturday while addressing a party congress in Sofia, local media reported.

The attacker pointed a gun at Dogan, but was prevented from firing, according to the reports. While security wrestled with the attacker, Dogan was tackled to the ground by his bodyguards.

The party, which mainly represents the Turkish minority in Bulgaria, had called the convention to elect a new leadership. Dogan, 58, has led the party since founding it in 1990.

After taking part in the governing coalition, the party switched to the opposition following the 2009 elections, which were won by the conservative Gerb party of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

Sports Illustrated Kid of The Year 2012

The 2012 Sports Illustrated Kids SportsKids of the Year, brothers Conner and Cayden Long, were honored at a star-studded event in New York City last night. The Long brothers were part of the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year ceremony that recognized Miami Heat star LeBron James. Celebrities such as Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski were also in attendance, and everyone there was impressed by Conner's and Cayden's accomplishments.

Cayden, suffers from cerebral palsy, but Conner doesn't let that stop him from playing sports with his brother. The two compete in triathlons together, with Conner towing Cayden behind in a raft during the swimming leg, towing him behind his bike during the cycling portion, and pushing him during the run. Triathlons have been a great way for the brothers to come together and have made them an inspiration to everyone that hears their story.

After hearing their story at the Sportsman ceremony, Coach K said that Conner and Cayden…

PaperTab: Revolutionary paper tablet reveals future tablets to be thin and flexible as paper

Cambridge, UK and Kingston, Canada - January 7, 2013 -- Watch out tablet lovers -- A flexible paper computer developed at Queen's University in collaboration with Plastic Logic and Intel Labs will revolutionize the way people work with tablets and computers. However, it is fully interactive with a flexible, high-resolution 10.7" plastic display developed by Plastic Logic, a flexible touchscreen, and powered by the second generation Intel® Core i5 processor. In a snoozer of a game between Alabama and Notre Dame. The most talked about part of the game wasn't any particular play but the girlfriend of Alabama's quarterback A.J. McCarron, Katherine Webb AKA the former Miss Alabama.

ESPN zoomed in on Katherine Webb and commentators Kirk Herbstreit and 73-year old Brent Musburger’s said, "You quarterbacks, you get all the good looking women", "Whoa", and "If you’re a youngster in Alabama, start getting the football out and throw it around the backyard with pop."

Enrile gave 18 senators P1.6M each for Christmas

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile played Santa Claus last Christmas, making a list and checking it twice as he gave gifts to Senate members and personnel apparently on the basis of who were “naughty” or “nice.”

Enrile gave 22 senators a total of almost P30 million, a gift that one senator said was “unconscionable and unconstitutional.”

The cash gift allegedly came from the funds allotted for the Senate post vacated by President Aquino when he won the presidential election in 2010.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer on Tuesday tried to set an interview with Enrile in connection with the cash gift but he was not immediately available. A member of his staff said Enrile was on his way out of town and could no longer be reached for comment.

The various senators the Inquirer talked to agreed that the P1.6 million bonanza for each of the 18 senators was the biggest yet. Enrile has been Senate President since November 2008.

The senators could not remember the amounts distrib…

Chinese Advice to 50-Year Olds and Older

Got this from an e-mail.

(Translated from the Chinese).

Because none of us have many years to live, and we can't take along anything when we go, so we don't have to be too thrifty...

Spend the money that should be spent, enjoy what should be enjoyed, donate what you are able to donate, but don't leave all to your children or grandchildren, for you don't want them to become parasites who are waiting for the day you will die!!

Don't worry about what will happen after we are gone, because when we return to dust, we will feel nothing about praises or criticisms. The time to enjoy the worldly life and your hard earned wealth will be over!

Don't worry too much about your children, for children will have their own destiny and should find their own way. Don't be your children's slave. Care for them, love them, give them gifts but also enjoy your money while you can. Life should have more to it than working from the cradle to…

Philippines Will Phase-out 3.5 Million Tricycles to Save Earth

I found this article on the ASEAN Community Facebook page. Great place to get info about ASEAN.

'Philippines will phase-out 3.5 Million Tricycles to save EARTH & $5 Billion USD imported Gas yearly'

Reported in the Environmental Protection Online, Philippine government will replace the Pedi-cab or the tricycles-taxis with Electronic Trikes.

The Philippines will be introducing electronic tricycle taxis to replace its petrol-fuelled models, which could cut carbon dioxide emissions by a quarter of million tons.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide $300 million and The Philippines government will provide an additional $99 million to the project. Tricycle taxis are one of the Philippines' most widely used forms of transport for travelling short distances, but they are also responsible for more than two-thirds of air pollution.

The ADB estimates that there are 200,000 tricycles in the Manila metropolitan region alone, and about 3.5 million in the entire country. The …

Overpopulation good for Filipinos, says bishop

Read this on the Inquirer. Some priest still thinks we're in the Spanish times.

NAGA CITY—Bishop Gilbert Garcera of the Diocese of Daet, the capital of Camarines Norte, believes overpopulation has been advantageous to the Philippines and to the world because it has increased the number of overseas workers and migrants who could send remittances back home while taking care of ageing people abroad and spreading the Christian faith.

Contrary to the aims of the reproductive health (RH) bill, Garcera said the huge Philippine population could be part of “God’s plan for Filipinos to be caregivers to ageing nations whose populations had become stagnant.”

He also said many Filipino women would make “good wives” for foreigners in countries that have low population growth.

Garcera said many countries such as Germany and the United States had a stable but ageing population that would need people to take care of them, and that purpose could be served by Filipinos.

“Filipinos have a big miss…
