Tupas admits meeting PSBank branch manager when he was 15

3:21 PM

From the Inquirer.

After some hemming and hawing, Iloilo Representative Niel Tupas Jr. on Wednesday finally confirmed he and a Philippine Savings Bank branch manager, Anabelle Tiongson, had met before.

In a phone interview over Radyo Inquirer prompted by a photograph that appeared in the social network Facebook on Monday, Tupas confirmed he and Tiongson met at a wedding held 25 years ago.

In the picture, a man wearing a barong Tagalog—identified as Tupas—and a woman in an off-shoulder gown— supposedly Tiongson—are shown flanking a young, newlywed couple.

Asked if he had seen the picture, Tupas said in Filipino: “It was shown to me yesterday, so I remembered. I was 15, that was 25 years ago.”

He maintained, however, he did not know that Tiongson was the same woman who was in the photo with him as part of a wedding entourage.

“You don’t really get to know the other people in such occasions,” he said.

The head of the prosecution panel in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, Tupas was grilled by Senator Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada over the alleged closeness of the Tupas and Tiongson families of Iloilo.

At the trial, Tupas denied having met, or having been introduced to Tiongson before. The latter also said she only got to know of Tupas through the media.

Tiongson appeared before the Senate impeachment court to testify on Corona’s bank accounts at the PSBank branch on Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City.

The accounts were the subject of a subpoena served by the prosecution based on supposed copies of Corona’s bank accounts. Representative Rey Umali, a member of the prosecution panel, said the documents were given to him by a “small lady.”

The provenance of the Corona bank records got even more complicated after Tiongson said Quezon City Representative Jorge “Bolet” Banal had visited her office to inquire about the veracity of the documents on Corona’s bank records.

Here is the photo I posted of Tupas and Tiongson as wedding sponsors.

FHM magazine apologizes over ‘racist’ cover

12:47 PM

From the Inquirer.

MANILA, Philippines—A Philippine men’s magazine has apologized and pulled its cover after critics described it as racist.

FHM Philippines said Monday it has decided to change the cover of its March issue which showed fair-skinned actress Bela Padilla in a hot pink bikini flanked by dark-skinned women in black bikinis. The caption said, “Bela Padilla stepping out of the shadows.”
Padilla, a soap opera star, has a Filipino mother and a British father.

The magazine said after uploading the issue on its Facebook page it received a slew of complaints that the cover was racist.
FHM apologized and said it will use a different cover when the magazine hits newsstands in March.

It said it will strive to be more sensitive in the future.

Apple sends out invitations for March 7 iPad event in San Francisco

10:37 AM

From Appleinsider.

Apple on Tuesday sent out official invitations for a media event to be held next Wednesday, March 7, in San Francisco where it is expected to introduce its next-generation iPad.

The March 7 event will be held at 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Calif., the same place the last two iPad unveilings have been held. The invitation features a finger pushing down on an iOS calendar icon with March 7 as the date.

"We have something you really have to see. And touch," the invitation reads.

The inclusion that people will "have to see" the new device is likely a reference to the high-resolution Retina Display that Apple is expected to add to its next-generation iPad. Rumors have suggested the display will have a resolution of 2,048 by 1,536 pixels, which would be twice the resolution of the 1,024-by-768 screen found on the iPad 2.

In fact, the invitation itself could even be a picture of the new iPad display. The image does show a very crisp iPad screen that could be a higher resolution than the current iPad 2.

Apple's invitations went out only moments after financial network CNBC incorrectly claimed that the next iPad would be unveiled at an event in New York next week. However, reporter Jon Fortt quickly followed up to explain that he has heard that New York will play a "key" role in next week's announcement.

The March 7 event date has been expected for weeks now, but Tuesday's invitations were the first official confirmation of the media briefing from Apple. Recent reports out of the Far East have suggested that Apple could offer near-immediate availability of the new iPad, with claims that the new devices are already being shipped to the U.S.

Apple's March 7 event invitation, via The Loop.

The last few weeks have seen a whirlwind of iPad-related rumors in anticipation of the event. Another purported leak from a Chinese microblogging site has suggested that Apple's high-definition Retina Display could add a previously unexpected $80 premium to the price of the iPad, pushing the entry level price up to $579 for the Wi-Fi-only 16GB model. All Wi-Fi models would see an $80 price boost, the documents suggest, while 3G-capable models would see their prices rise $70 each.

Other changes to the iPad are expected to be largely internal, with evidence of a faster processor and potential 4G LTE connectivity having surfaced in recent weeks. On the outside, the next iPad is expected to look largely the same, with an external case featuring edges slightly more tapered than the iPad 2.

Another leak showed a purported "iPad 3" logic board, featuring a processor labeled "A5X," suggesting the chip could be a more powerful version of the A5 CPU currently found in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S rather than a full-fledged "A6" upgrade. Reports have also been divided as to whether the next iPad will be powered by a quad-core processor or a dual-core CPU.

Tiongson and Tupas Wedding Sponsors

10:30 AM

From ABS-CBN News.

MANILA, Philippines - House chief prosecutor Niel Tupas Jr. on Wednesday denied rumors that he has multimillion-peso accounts in Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank).

Text messages circulated on Wednesday said Tupas has a P158-million time deposit, a P36-million savings account and a P5.22-million current account at PSBank Katipunan branch.

PSBank Katipunan is the same branch where Chief Justice Renato Corona had P19 million in savings as of December 2010, according to bank records.

Tupas said efforts to link him to PSBank Katipunan and its manager, Annabel Tiongson, insinuate that he was able to procure bank documents for Corona's impeachment trial.

He denied ever setting foot at PSBank Katipunan or meeting Tiongson.

"Wala po akong bank account sa PSBank," he said. "I have never met Tiongson until she appeared on the witness stand."

Sen Jinggoy Estrada, however, said he does not believe that Tiongson and Tupas do not know each other. He said he respects Tupas' position that he said he does not know Tiongson.

Estrada had previously pointed out that Tiongson and Tupas both hail from Iloilo. He said Tiongson’s first cousin, Roberto 'Obet' Buenaflor Armada, was vice governor when Tupas’ father and namesake was governor.

He also revealed that Tiongson’s cousin, Obet, ran as vice governor in 2010. His running mate then was Raul Tupas, who ran for governor. The latter is Tupas’ brother.

Contrary to what Tupas said, here's evidence showing they do know each other. They were wedding sponsors. Magkumpare at Kumare sila.

OFW families should always think of the day remittances will stop coming--Suze Orman

12:37 PM

MANILA, Philippines -- Families of overseas Filipino workers must always prepare for the day that remittances from their loved ones would stop coming so they can better manage their finances, international personal finance advisor Suze Orman said.

Orman, who hosts her own show on CNBC and is a favorite resource person at Oprah, said that families who are dependent on remittances must always think that the money will not flow forever because their loved ones can lose their jobs abroad, can get sick, if not die.

“Anything can happen at any time and the problem that is going on out there [abroad] when one person from over there stops sending money in here, you’ve not only affected one person there but also four, five or six people over here. Then that starts the very dangerous possibility of things going wrong,” Orman said during a briefing on Monday hosted by the Bank of the Philippine Islands.

OFW-dependent families have to understand where that money comes from in order for them to get motivated to fix their household finances, she added.

The Philippines’ economy is kept afloat by consumer spending that is primarily fueled by OFW remittances. Last year, overseas workers sent $20.1 billion back home, making it the biggest amount remitted to date. According to a survey conducted by Citibank in 2007, however, only one of 10 Filipinos save and that their savings will only last families nine weeks in case the breadwinner stops earning.

Orman said OFW dependents must change their expectation that the funds they receive every month are going to be there always.

“And once we understand it is possible that check would stop [coming], you would think twice before you go out and buy a flat screen TV or you do things other than saving that money,” the financial advisor said.

De Lima bats for review of Anti-Hazing Law

11:33 AM

From the Manila Standard Today.

JUSTICE Secretary Leila de Lima wants a review of the country’s anti-hazing law following the death of a law freshman of the San Beda College of Law allegedly at the hands of her fraternity brothers in Lambda Rho Beta during during initiation rites.

De Lima said that despite the law, fraternity hazing is still practiced, often with fatal consequences as with the tragic death of 25-year-old Marvin Reglos who was subjected to hazing during initiation rites of Lambda Rho Beta fraternity based in San Beda College.

De Lima founded the Lambda Rho Sigma sorority of San Beda College, the counterpart of Lambda Rho Beta.

Reglos’ death also came after the Supreme Court handed down its ruling on the case of Lenny Villa, an Ateneo Law School student who died in February 1991 during initiation rites conducted by members of the Aquila Legis fraternity.

“It’s very unfortunate. Have we not learned our lessons from those past tragedies? There is a need to take a second look at the regulation on these fraternities,” De Lima lamented.

She strongly believed that Republic Act 8049, or the Anti-Hazing Act, should be given more teeth by Congress for it to be an effective deterrence to killings in initiation rites.

“I think it’s high time to review command responsibility on leaders of fraternity on conduct of initiation rites under the anti-hazing act,” De Lima said.

Earlier this week, the Justice secretary personally assured the victim’s family that she would pursue justice for Reglos and prosecute her fraternity brothers or brods if they are found to have been involved.

De Lima has already summoned the leaders of Lambda Rho Beta to shed light on the fraternity’s alleged involvement.

Seriously, when are these stupid people going to stop this hazing? How will hazing actually make them loyal brothers in their fraternity other than to teach them that they should do the same to new members? What is the point of these senseless violence?

Bongbong Marcos On EDSA Anniversary

5:13 PM

I read this on Bongbong Marcos' Facebook page. No matter your political leanings, I think it's a good read.

In response to several queries (it’s that time of the year -- EDSA anniversary) on my take on the declaration of Martial Law and the events that took place in February of 1986, there is really nothing more I can add to what I’ve already said over the last two decades; and what happened in the past cannot be changed. But just to reiterate my view of that period of our history, and for the sake of those too young or yet to be born in the early 70’s, let me try and summarize how I see it. Martial Law was declared at a time different from now and I say this not only in regard to the Philippines but throughout the world including in western democracies where the youth of those nations rebelled against the established norms of that era. In the United States, armed clashes between civilians and police were frequent and groups such as the Black Panthers, The Weathermen, Students for a Democratic Society, Chicago Seven, and others, openly declared war against their government, the most powerful in the world. Then, even the US military had to be called out to quell violent demonstrations across their country resulting in deaths of students such as in the infamous “Kent State University Massacre.” There, at the heart of halcyon middle-class America, the US National Guards open-fired at the student demonstrators killing four students and wounding several others. Bombings of government buildings, arson, street violence were widespread across the US and in capitals across Western Europe – London, Paris, Madrid, Rome, and other cities in Europe. Manila, as well as other Asian capitals, was no exception. University students here took the same road of militancy and were linked to leftist labor unions and communist insurgents, and street violence was likewise widespread in urban areas of the country. Even for a young 15 year old like I was then, the militancy of that epoch was palpable. But as I’ve said previously, and at the risk of disappointing, I will leave to historians, impartial and trained in their field, to pass judgment on the merits of the declaration of Martial Law seen in that context as it should be.

As for what took place in February of 1986, twenty-six years ago to this month, again, I am in no position to pass judgment that would be seen as impartial simply because of my obvious personal involvement. Most of what we hear now from all sides are still within the ambit of propaganda. But I certainly am concerned with the state of our country today, more than a quarter of a century since the experience of EDSA1, as it has come to be known. I have chosen not to indulge in the “blame game” and rather, invest my energy in helping move this country forward. But if comparisons are to be made, and if there is a need to evaluate the road taken since then and what has resulted from it, it’s not difficult to arrive at answers, provided we ask the right questions. Has poverty been alleviated? Is the wealth of the country more equitably distributed? Do we have more jobs available at home? Has there been a rise in the quality of our education? Are we self sufficient in our daily food requirements? Is there less hunger? Crime? Insurgency? Corruption? Basic services? Health? The same questions can be asked of other countries, our neighboring countries specifically, and see whether we can answer the same way they would. China, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia can all point to the progress they have made these last twenty six years but unfortunately, for the majority of our people, nothing much has changed and today, and just this morning, a survey placed our unemployment rate at 24% or close to 10 Million unemployed adults. The country’s economic performance last year sunk to a dismal 3.7% growth. The problems we face remain daunting and there is still that need for Filipinos to unite and face these challenges as one nation, with a singular aim and direction, with a leadership that is willing to make sacrifices and capable of harnessing the talents of our people. We have seen what our neighbors have been able to achieve in the last 26 years. There is no reason why we cannot at least match their achievements if not do better. We need to change the politics of this country. Our leaders cannot be forever squabbling, engaging in vindictiveness, wasting energy and government resources in putting each other down at the expense of those that need help the most. Blaming past administrations will not bring food to the plates of the hungry. Excuses cannot substitute for performance and results. Promises without delivery only feed the anger of the people. Before it’s too late, let us all roll up our sleeves and get to work for the betterment of our country. For all and not just for some. If there is need for change in people’s attitudes and habits, let that change begin with ourselves. There is no argument more eloquently made than the one made by example. In a nut-shell, and for the media that have asked for my comments, that's my "take" on EDSA1 that's to be celebrated this weekend. It really has not varied much over the years. Good-night and a good weekend ahead for all of us.

Carmelo Anthony Talks Jeremy Lin Linsanity

Jeremy Lin got his big break when Carmelo Anthony got injured in the Knicks game against the New Jersey Nets. Since Jeremy Lin started playing, the Knicks are 8 and 1 compared to when Carmelo was playing.

Carmelo Anthony is scheduled to return to playing tonight and marks the first time Jeremy Lin will be playing with Carmelo Anthony. The big question on everyone's mind is, how well will Carmelo blend in with the style of play the Knicks are playing right now. Carmelo is well known as a one-on-one playing and a ball hog which bogs down the offense compared to the moving and running style of play Jeremy Lin brings to the Knicks and also the style of coaching of Mike D'Antoni.

In this interview, Stephen A. Smith talks to Carmelo Anthony about Linsanity.

ESPN fires writer over racial headline about Jeremy Lin

Sunday, February 19, 2012 10:59 PM

ESPN apologized for inappropriate references to New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin, and said it fired an employee responsible for such headline.

The phrase “chink in the armor’’ appeared Sunday morning on ESPN following the Knicks’ 89-85 loss to the New Orleans Hornets about the Taiwanese-American sensation.

The sports channel also said an anchor for ESPNNews has been suspended for 30 days after using an inappropriate word in asking a question about Lin.

“We again apologize, especially to Mr. Lin. His accomplishments are a source of great pride to Asian-American community, including the Asian-American employees at ESPN,” ESPN said in the statement.

Lin, a second-year point guard with an economics degree from Harvard University, led the Knicks to a seven-game winning streak before the loss to the Hornets.

“They’ve apologized and so from my end, I don’t care anymore,” Lin said, after leading the Knicks to a 104-97 victory over the Dallas Mavericks Sunday afternoon.

ESPN said the headline was removed 35 minutes after it was posted.

Michael Jordan - Air time

Saturday, February 18, 2012 7:50 PM

To be honest, I got interested in basketball again after watching Jeremy Lin. For the longest time, I haven't watched that much NBA since Michael Jordan retired. That was the last time I watched a lot of NBA games other than The Finals. So while browsing through some Jeremy Lin videos, I saw some old Michael Jordan videos and I came upon this video of Michael Jordan.

As anyone will tell you, Michael Jordan is the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time).

"Michael Jordan: Air Time" documents Jordan and the Chicago Bulls' 1991-92 season, including Jordan dealing with his friend and rival Magic Johnson's retirement announcement, gambling allegations, talk of the team possibly breaking the long-in-place season win record with 70 victories, filming a music video with Michael Jackson, and other obstacles throughout the course of the year. The video follows this with the "Dream Team" (Jordan and his fellow NBA stars) gaining worldwide attention as they partake and dominate in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, and concludes with the Bulls' championship ring ceremony in the fall of '92.

The Emergence of Jeremy Lin

Thursday, February 16, 2012 4:33 PM

From NBA.com. A recap of Jeremy Lin's incredible emergence as a star for the NY Knicks.

"Players playing that well don't usually come out of nowhere. It seems like they come out of nowhere, but if you can go back and take a look, his skill level was probably there from the beginning. It probably just went unnoticed."

-Kobe Bryant to Jeremy Lin after scoring 38pts on Lakers.

Why did he go unnoticed?

When you take a look at his track record, he led Palo Alto High School to 32-1 record and a CIF state title over nationally ranked Mater Dei High as a senior. He was a first team All-State selection and the Northern California Division II Player of the Year among several other accolades.

Then he received no athletic scholarship offers. Not even Stanford, the school right there in Palo Alto, offered him nothing. Lin got zilch, nada. What did he end up doing? Well he went on to Harvard and was a three-time All-Ivy League performer. He was named one of the country’s 12 most versatile players by ESPN’s Fran Fraschilla among the likes of Evan Turner, Greg Monroe, Gordon Hayward, Paul George, all of whom were drafted in the top 10 of the 2010 NBA Draft. As a junior, he was the only player in the nation to rank among the top 10 in his conference in points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, field goal percentage, free percentage and three-point percentage. As a senior, he helped the Crimson to its most wins in a season in school history. He became the first player in Ivy League history to record at least 1,450 points, 450 rebounds, 400 assists and 200 steals. The list goes on and on.

Then he went undrafted, even after Jim Calhoun, the coach of the No. 12 UConn team who barely beat Harvard during Lin’s senior season, 79-73, said, “I’ve seen a lot of teams come through here, and he could play for any of them.” This after Lin dropped 30 points and pulled down nine rebounds in the losing effort. After a summer league stint with the Mavericks, he eventually signed with the Warriors, only to play in 29 games as a rookie. Lin was then waived by the Warriors and then by the Houston Rockets, before winding up with the Knickerbockers.

Even then the story is not complete. Just two weeks before his breakout game against the Nets, Lin recorded a triple-double for the Erie BayHawks in the D-League. Now four NBA starts later, he’s the first player in league history with at least 20 points and seven assists in his first career starts. His 109 points in those starts is the most by any player since the ABA-NBA merger (the guy scored 76 points all season as a rookie with Golden State!).

Apple on Thursday announced Mac OS X 10.8, dubbed "Mountain Lion," the next major release of its Mac operating system, set to launch on the Mac App Store this summer, with a preview now available for Mac developers.

A developer preview of the forthcoming operating system update was released to developers on Thursday, and Apple has boasted that Mountain Lion packs over 100 new features, including many brought from the iPad and iOS mobile operating system.

"The Mac is on a roll, growing faster than the PC for 23 straight quarters, and with Mountain Lion things get even better," said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "The developer preview of Mountain Lion comes just seven months after the incredibly successful release of Lion and sets a rapid pace of development for the world’s most advanced personal computer operating system."

Jeremy Lin finally gets a new apartment, and a place in NBA history

2:23 PM

Jeremy Lin's long, national real estate nightmare is over. Like many young professionals working in the New York City metropolitan area, he struggled for weeks to find a suitable living space as his role with his employer was far from assured. Now that his contract option has been picked up for the rest of the season -- and, er, Lin has absolutely set the sporting world on fire with his week and a half of jaw-dropping play for the New York Knicks -- Lin has decided to move into former Knick David Lee's old apartment in the Trump Towers (not those Trump Towers) in White Plains, N.Y., near the team's practice facility.

Lee still owns the apartment, and is subletting it to Lin in the same way he did with current Knicks big man Amar'e Stoudemire last year while the All-Star looked for a Manhattan apartment of his own. This lineage means that Lin is clearly the best defender to have lived between these particular walls. And true to a New York-area's tenant board, some of his new neighbors are somewhat happy with this. From the New York Daily News:

"I'd say 90% of the people in the building will be very, very happy," said tenant Daniel Ratki, 32.

Ninety percent, eh? Harvard educated, soft-spoken man and cheerful man of devout religious beliefs, greatest thing to happen to sports in who knows how long, Savior of the Saint-less New York Knicks. Ninety percent? That's a tenant board, for you. "So, Mr. Christ. We hear you like to walk around with sandals. And how much of this water, exactly, will you be turning into wine?"

(No, that's not a reference to Lin's religious beliefs. Stop it.)

Lin will pay $3,800 a month rent, and will live in the same general area (if not complex) as some of the other Knick youngsters. The Daily News has pictures of apartments in the White Plains Trump Towers, but not Lin's apartment.

Grace Lee Sees Herself Marrying P-Noy

10:13 PM

From Yahoo! News Philippines.

The altar.

That's where Grace Lee says her relationship with President Benigno Aquino III is headed.

In her morning show "Good Times in the Morning" last Wednesday, the Korean-born radio and TV personality was asked by her New York-based co-anchor Mo Twister how long their relationship would last.

She replied, "The full length."

Needled further on where she expected their dates would lead to, Lee answered, "The altar." She added, "I'm praying for this."
Aquino celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, Feb.8, the same day Lee said they were destined for the altar.

The romance between the 29-year-old Lee and the 52-year-old Aquino has been met with skepticism by many who have become used to the President's short-lived romances. Among those linked to him in his almost two-year presidency are Valenzuela councilor Shalani Soledad, who recently married Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo, stylist Liz Uy and stockbroker Len Lopez.

During the program, Mo Twister predicted the relationship to last until "August."

He then opened the phone lines to the question, "How long will this (Aquino-Lee) relationship last?" One listener replied, "May."
The bachelor president admitted two weeks ago that he has been dating Lee.

While Aquino asked media to grant him the privacy he said he was entitled to, Lee has been forthcoming in media interviews. She disclosed that she and the President would talk animatedly for three to five hours.

"He's brilliant, he is the most intelligent man I've met in my life," an obviously smitten Lee enthused, even describing the President as "a walking encyclopedia."

Lee revealed in an off-camera talk with a TV host that the President had offered to provide her security courtesy of a team from the Presidential Security Group. This prompted Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte to say the Palace would still have to review whether or not the mandate of the PSG can cover even persons outside the President's official family.

Lee's talent manager Arnold Vegafria said the radio and TV jockey first met on June 27, 2011 at the inauguration of the Korea Electric Power Corp. in Barangay Colon in Naga, Cebu. He said the President was heard to have remarked that Lee was "guapa (pretty)," mistaking her to be Cebuana.

Their second meeting took place during the state visit of Korean president Lee Myung-bak in November, where Lee was in Malacañang as an interpreter and host of the event.

Before the end of 2011, Vegafria said the President granted Lee an interview in Malacanang for her radio show. "And that's it," he said.
In an earlier exclusive interview with TV5's Luchi Cruz-Valdes for the show "Journo," Lee admitted that the 22-year age difference between them sometimes bothers her. "But the more I get to know him, the less I feel the age difference," she said.

Asked by Cruz-Valdes if she sees the relationship "pushing through already," Lee replied, "I don't think we're playing around. We're both not at the age to be playing around."

In her radio show, Lee said she would try to convince the President to stop smoking.

She has met with two of the President's elder sisters, Ballsy Cruz and Pinky Abellada, but has yet to meet his movie-and-TV-star sister, Kris Aquino.

Lee denied earlier rumors linking her romantically to Kris' former husband, basketball star James Yap.

The Jeremy Lin story is real magic

12:49 AM

From the National Post.

TORONTO — Somewhere in the vast and sudden storm that has gathered around Jeremy Lin — an electrical hurricane that whipped out of a clear blue sky, so powerful that at this point nearly everybody has heard about the incredible weather out East — there is a human story, a story about luck, a story about faith, and above all, basketball. Used to be, Jeremy Lin was a footnote to just about everybody. Now, he contains multitudes.

And so Tuesday, when Jeremy Lin and his New York Knicks — they are his, right now — arrived in Toronto, the storm travelled with him. It was announced he is on the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated. At the packed morning shootaround a journalist of Taiwanese descent proffered a sheet of Year of the Dragon stamps, in honour of his birth year and 2012. Some 4,000 seats had been sold since Friday for Asian Heritage night; it was Toronto’s biggest crowd of the year, and it cheered Lin the first time he touched the ball, and every time he scored.

But once the game started it was just basketball, and Lin looked like an exhausted young man. He was forced to his left, missed shots, turned the ball over five times in the first half. At the other end, Toronto’s Jose Calderon was killing him, splashing jumper after jumper. Oddly, some of the crowd began to boo Lin when he had the ball. People started tweeting that the so-called Linsanity was over. Lin kept grinding — and this turned into a prison-yard game full of contact and falls — but missed four free throws in the fourth quarter alone. The Knicks were down 86-77 with 4:03 left.

But with just over a minute left and New York down three, Lin faked a charging Linas Kleiza out of his socks, drove right at Amir Johnson — who had been blocking shots all night — hung on him in the air, and completed a big-boy three-point play to tie the game at 87. Something was swirling.

And after a Toronto miss, and a late New York offensive rebound, Lin had the ball at centre court with the shot clock turned off, and the crowd stood and roared like the ocean. Lin looked back at Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni. Was he asking if the coach wanted a timeout? “Actually, admitted Lin, grinning a little sheepishly, “I was asking if I could have an [isolation play].” It was his fifth career start. It was the definition of fearlessness. D’Antoni nodded.

And Lin waited, and the crowd howled, and Calderon backed off, and Lin launched a three-pointer that smashed through with 0.5 seconds left. Practically perfect.

In his fifth career start, Lin finished with 27 points on 9-of-20 shooting, 11 assists, eight turnovers, and another chapter in a story that continues to defy credulity. He was asked if he could believe this was happening to him. He smiled again. “No,” he said.

“I’m just glad it went like this so we could calm the Linsanity down a little bit,” cracked D’Antoni, before comically rolling his eyes.

“I can’t really explain it,” said Amar’e Stoudemire, who scored 21 points in his first game with Lin.

Stuff like this is why Jeremy Lin’s existence had become a forensic investigation. How a skinny kid with Taiwanese parents in Palo Alto, Calif., could not procure a college scholarship, got into Harvard, majored in economics and excelled on the court, but went undrafted after four years. How he spent a year on Golden State’s bench, how two NBA teams waived him, how he wound up as New York’s fifth point guard, how he was one Baron Davis injury setback from being set adrift again. How he was sleeping on his brother’s couch when the Knicks ran out of options, threw him out there like bait, and watched open-mouthed as he became a star.

Photo of Jeremy Lin As A Kid

12:27 AM

The Cinderella or Linderella story of Jeremy Lin continues. People are posting stories about Jeremy Lin all over the Internet like what it's like to play basketball with him. I even found one that showed his picture in 6th grade.

Bottom right center photo.

I love the story on the sixth grade where he was late for a game and came in on the 2nd half of the game with his team losing 16 to 10. When asked why he was late, he answered "violin practice". The coach threw him in the game and they went on to win by two points!

In China, an Instant Star and an Emerging Symbol

12:01 AM

From the New York Times.

HANGZHOU, China — The clearest sign that Jeremy Lin’s appeal has spanned the Pacific to mainland China may lie not in the 1.4 million Chinese microblog messages mentioning him in recent days, but in a rare failure to meet demand here in the heart of one of the world’s largest centers of pirated garment manufacturing.

“His jerseys have sold out, even including the counterfeit ones,” said Zheng Xiaojun, a 24-year-old clerk here in the capital of Zhejiang province, near Shanghai.

Lin’s stunning success with the Knicks over the last week and a half has captured the imagination of the Chinese, from Communist Party bosses to the often-persecuted Christian minority. He has been particularly popular here in northern Zhejiang province, from which his maternal grandmother fled to Taiwan in the last days of China’s civil war in the late 1940s.

Lin is commonly described in the United States as Taiwanese-American because his parents grew up in Taiwan before moving to the United States, where Lin was born. But mainland China is already starting to claim him as its own, part of an incessant rivalry across the Taiwan Strait.

Cai Qi, the organization chief for the Communist Party in Zhejiang, posted a message on his Twitter-like microblog over the weekend claiming that Lin’s ancestral home is Jiaxing, a city on the northeastern outskirts of Hangzhou where Lin’s maternal grandmother grew up.

Since 1991, she and other family members have been giving several thousand dollars a year to Jiaxing High School, according to the school’s Web site. Her nephew, Yu Guohua, is Lin’s closest relative still living in northern Zhejiang.

Yu, a 56-year-old former plastics factory worker who retired early on disability after sustaining injuries in a car crash, said in a telephone interview Tuesday night that Lin had come to play basketball with the Jiaxing High School team last May and been mobbed by admirers.

Yu said he did not have a chance to meet Lin in the throng, but spoke with his family. “His father was very supportive of Lin’s playing basketball, but his grandmother was not, for fear he would be injured,” Yu said.

Lin may owe his height, 6 feet 3 inches, to his maternal grandmother’s family, Yu said. Chen Weiji, the father of Lin’s grandmother, was well over 6 feet and all of Chen’s children were tall as well, he said.

Jeremy Lin NY Knicks vs Toronto Raptors 2012 Highlights

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 11:47 PM

Jeremy Lin does it again! In a game against the Toronto Raptors where the NY Knicks was trailing most of the game. Jeremy Lin came out as the hero of the game when he went to the basket and got fouled as the ball went in. Making the three point play which tied the game. In the last 18 seconds of the game, with the game tied, Jeremy Lin held on to the ball and used up the clock, finally shooting a 3 point leaving 0.5 seconds left in the game to win.

Jeremy Lin finishes with 27 pts, 11 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Making this the 6 straight wins for the New York Knicks.

Here are the highlights.

That video didn't really show the best part of the last few seconds of the game. This video shows the miss by the Knicks and get got back the rebound which game them a second opportunity with 18 seconds left in the game and the ball with Jeremy Lin. It was amazing the composure and confidence of Lin.

By the way, notice that the Toronto fans initially was cheering for the Raptors and in the end, they were cheering for Jeremy Lin like it was game 7 of the NBA finals.

Did you hear what Landry Fields was telling Jeremy Lin after he hit that 3 point shot?

Whitney Houston has died at age 48

6:24 PM

From OnTheRedCarpet.com

Whitney Houston has died at age 48, her publicist confirmed to OnTheRedCarpet.com's parent company ABC on Saturday, February 10.

Publicist Kristen Foster said that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear.

She was last seen Thursday in Beverly Hills. Houston was scheduled to perform Saturday at a pre-Grammy gala for producer Clive Davis.

Houston won six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards and two Emmy Awards during her long career. She was one of the world's best-selling musicians, having sold over 170 million albums and singles worldwide.

Towards the end of her career, Houston became as well-known for her drug use, erratic behavior and tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown.

The singer, who has struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for years, relapsed and returned to rehab in May.

"Whitney Houston is currently in an out-patient rehab program for drug and alcohol treatment," the 48-year-old pop and R&B singer's spokesperson told People magazine at the time. "Whitney voluntarily entered the program to support her long-standing recovery process."

Houston, known for her songs in her 1992 film "The Bodyguard," including her cover of "I Will Always Love You," underwent treatment for substance abuse in 2004 and in 2005.

In her infamous 2002 interview with ABC News' Diane Sawyer in an interview, Houston said, "The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy."

She also denied using crack cocaine, telling Sawyer, "Crack is cheap. We don't do crack. Crack is whack."

She told Sawyer that she has used alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and prescription drugs at different points during her career.

"I partied a lot," she said. " Trust me, I partied my tail off. You get to a point where you know the party's over."

In 2000, the singer was detained at a Hawaii airport after a security guard said some 15 grams of marijuana were found in her purse. The drug possession charge was later dismissed.

Houston leaves behind one child, Bobbi Kristina from her marriage to Bobby Brown. Houston and Brown were married from 1992 until 2007.

Here's one of her most famous songs.

RIP Whitney, you will always be remembered for your beautiful voice.

Jeremy Lin's New York Knicks vs Kobe Bryant's LA Lakers Highlights

Friday, February 10, 2012 9:36 PM

Jeremy Lin does it again! He scored 38 points and 7 assist against the Lakers tonight scoring more than Kobe Bryant!

Here are the highlights of tonight's game. Really humble guy too.

Half time comments of Magic Johnson on Jeremy Lin. Magic said, "this guy is for real".

Here's the post game interview. I can't believe he is so humble. Possibly the classiest player in the NBA today where almost every player is talking about their own star powers.

Kobe Bryant's comment on Jeremy Lin after their lost to the Knicks.

Kobe Bryant on Jeremy Lin: 'What the [fudge] is going on?'

4:31 PM

BOSTON -- After his Los Angeles Lakers defeated the archrival Celtics 88-87 in overtime, NBA superstar Kobe Bryant fielded a number of questions about his next opponent: Former Harvard and current New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin, who has averaged 25.3 points and 8.3 assists in his last three games.

"I know who he is, but I don't really know what's going on too much with him," said Bryant of the Chinese-American sensation. "I don't even know what he's done. Like, I have no idea what you guys are talking about. I'll take a look at it tonight though."

Asked again about the "Linning" or "LInsanity" excitement that's been sweeping the globe, Bryant said, "I don't even know what the [fudge] is going on. What the [fudge] is going on? Who is this kid? I've heard about him and stuff like that, but what's he been doing? Is he getting like triple doubles or some [stuff]? He's averaging 28 and eight? No [stuff].

"If he's playing well, I'll just have to deal with him."

Finally, asked if he would consider guarding the upstart Lin, Kobe added, "Jesus Christ. Let's not get ahead of ourselves."

Reporters can be really stupid can't they? I mean, Kobe Bryant can beat Jeremy Lin with his eyes closed. What's the point of those questions?

Philippines Transition to K to 12 Education Program

3:50 PM

There's been a lot of confusion, anger and frustration with the Philippines change to the new K to 12 education program that is going to be implemented this year.

Currently, the Philippine educational system is based on 10 years of basic education. Six years of elementary and four years of high school. With nursery and kindergarten being optional.

According to the Official Gazette

The K to 12 program is Kindergarten and 12 years of elementary and secondary (high school).

The model that is currently being proposed by DepEd is the K-6-4-2 Model. This model involves Kindergarten, six years of elementary education, four years of junior high school (Grades 7 to 10) and two years of senior high school (Grades 11 to 12). The two years of senior high school intend to provide time for students to consolidate acquired academic skills and competencies.

What is Senior High School?

  • 2 years of in-depth specialization for students depending on the occupation/career track they wish to pursue
  • Skills and competencies relevant to the job market
  • The 2 years of senior HS intend to provide time for students to consolidate acquired academic skills and competencies.
  • The curriculum will allow specializations in Science and Technology, Music and Arts, Agriculture and Fisheries, Sports, Business and Entrepreneurship.
A full 12 years of basic education will eventually be required for entry into tertiary level education (entering freshmen by SY 2018-2019 or seven years from now).

Parents are angry with the added cost of 2 more years of education. Students are angry because they have to stay in school longer. I can understand completely how they feel. I would feel the same way too.

Here's a copy of a letter sent out by St. Jude to parents on how they plan to transition to the new system.

I have friends who said that instead of doing the stupid K to 12 program, the government should improve the quality of education instead of implementing this hare-brained idea. They go on to say that they would be willing to bet that their children who are in the current 10 year program are smarter than those students who go to 12 years of education in the US.

However, they seem to forget that their children are going in private schools where they are paying well over P50,000 a year and comparing them to students in the US who are going in public schools. Not a fair comparison. Of course their children will be smarter. You get what you pay for. If they compare their children with those going in private schools in Singapore or Japan, then it's a different story.

While it's frustrating for students and parents to add two more years, I believe this is the future of education if we want our children to be more successful. Part of the reason is this, when you have children graduating high school at age 16 or 17, most of them have no idea what careers they want to go into. I know I didn't at that age. Add to the fact that when I entered college, we had 2 years of minor subjects like English and Filipino which I thought was a complete waste of time. Instead of learning what we should be learning for our chosen field, we wasted a lot time and money for something I thought was completely useless.

It also didn't help that by the end of my 2nd year of college, I decided I really wanted to study something else entirely.

The new 2 years of senior high school program which will help students choose a specialization will give them enough time to decide what careers they really want. Of course, not all students are created equal, some will know early in life what they want to become but some won't. Those who know early will see the additional two years as a nuisance while those who can't afford college or don't know will have time to save money and decide what they want to do.

The nature of education is changing. We are in a global society and Filipinos are migrating a lot. Since our school system is not the same as the international standard, parents and children sometimes encounter problems in how to integrate their children in their new school.

It's not a problem if you have a child in elementary. For example, if you have a child who is 9 or 10 years old and is in Grade 4 in the Philippines, when they move to the US or Canada, they go to either Grade 4 or 5. Public education in these countries are based on the child's age.

However, if you have a child who is in the 4th year of high school in the Philippines who is 16 years old who expects to go to college next year. When they migrate to the US or Canada, they have to take Grade 10 to 12 plus ESL (English as a Second Language) before they can get to college or University.

The reason is because they don't allow students who is not turning 18 that year into college (unless your child is a genius or has taken all the pre-requisites for their course).

I know that even if the Philippine government added 2 more years of education that nothing will change unless they improve the quality of education, but more education is actually better as it will give children and teachers more time to master certain subjects. I also believe that continuous education and upgrade is essential in today's environment.

People will not always agree with this view especially those whose family is rich and own businesses. What does additional education add to their children when their children are going to be the boss anyway? However, not everyone is going to be a business owner.

I cringe every time I see a Filipino college graduate coming from an unknown provincial college who can't even write or spell properly when they are applying for a job. Their resumes alone makes me wonder how they were able to graduate. But that's a question of the quality of education and not the additional years of school. I'm just saying.

During my parents time, if you have a high school diploma, that's usually good enough to get you a job. In my time, if you graduate with a college degree you are employable. If you only have a high school degree, don't even bother looking for a good job because the only job you'll get is a janitorial job (nothing against being a janitor). Today, a Master's degree or an MBA is almost equivalent to a college degree. You'll have a hard time getting a high paying job in a multinational company unless you have that.

It's a different world, our children needs the tools to compete. Our education system has to change and improve with the times, we need to start building children that is prepared for the future. A future whose foundation is built upon math, science, agriculture and business. We have to stop educating children just to say they graduated from college with no useful skills. We need children who are also learning life skills and technical skills to help improve their lives for their future and their family's future.
