Happy New Year! (Warning -- Gruesome Photo Included)

11:53 AM

The New Year is coming and we all know what that means. Firecrackers! Yes, it's that time of year again when people go all stupid and light up bombs all over town and polluting the city with paper, smoke and trying to kill each other.

Magandang Gabi Bayan with Noli De Castro used to air an episode every year about people getting injured when playing with firecrackers. I remember the sale of firecrackers went down every year because of that show until the show stopped when Noli De Castro became a senator.

I hope you all have a safe and Happy New Year and avoid ending up like this guy.

Relief drive: Poor show again they’re quick to give than rich

3:47 PM

Even before Ateneo de Manila University officially launched its own relief drive on Monday for the victims and survivors of Tropical Storm “Sendong,” one of its security guards had already come forward, carrying a small bag containing two tins of canned goods, instant noodles and some rice.

“He said it was the (Christmas) gift he got from his office and that he was giving it to the relief drive,” said Harvey Keh, a program director at the Ateneo School of Government.

Organizers didn’t have to wait long for warm bodies to man the processing area, Keh also noted. Two Ateneo scholars, who come from low-income families, immediately volunteered to help.

“You can see that poverty is not something that paralyzes people. The response has been tremendous,” said Keh, also a convenor of Kaya Natin!, an advocacy group for good governance which partnered with Ateneo for the relief drive.

Keh’s observations seem to validate a 2006 study which showed that Filipinos, Christmastime or not, are indeed a charitable lot.

The study, conducted by Social Weather Stations and the consultancy group Venture for Fund Raising, found that 99 percent of Filipinos donate one way or another to different causes.

The study also reached an interesting conclusion. “The poor give more than the rich. It’s fantastic!” said Venture executive director Marianne Quebral.

“And it’s not because there are more poor people than there are rich people. It’s (based on) absolute figures, in terms of average annual giving,” Quebral explained in an interview on Tuesday.

“Filipinos are really hospitable people. Kahit hirap na hirap na, magbibigay pa rin (Even those living in deep poverty would still give to charity). Nobody is too poor to give,” she told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Fresh proof of this remarkable trait may be emerging in the various humanitarian projects now under way for Sendong’s victims. Almost a week since the storm whipped Northern Mindanao and parts of the Visayas, help continues to pour in from all over.

In Iloilo City, 74-year-old Ernesto Lioro came to the local station of Bombo Radio to hand over four plastic bags filled with old clothes on Wednesday, then came back a couple of hours later with two more bags.

“I don’t know anyone in Mindanao. I just want to help the flood victims,” a teary-eyed Lioro told the staff members.

His example was replicated at other collection points in Iloilo, like those set up by local TV and radio stations.

The donors came from all walks of life, some arriving in pedicabs, bikes and tricycles. Others with bulkier donations came in taxis or even hired trucks.

Maximo Fernandez, a resident of Iloilo’s Jaro district, said he decided to cancel a family trip to General Santos City and just use his P16,000 budget to buy canned goods, detergent and candies for the storm victims.

Lytro Light Field Camera

10:27 AM

There's a new camera in town, this camera allows you to shoot now, focus later.

Mountain View, California-based startup called Lytro unveiled its new light-field camera.

According to the Lytro website.

"Lytro lets you take pictures like never before. Unlike a conventional camera that captures a single plane of light, the Lytro camera captures the entire light field, which is all the light traveling in every direction in every point in space.

Capture everything - instantly.

Capture living pictures with the press of a single button. By instantly capturing complete light field data, the Lytro gives you capabilities you've never had in a regular camera.

Focus after the fact.

Since you'll capture the color, intensity, and direction of all the light, you can experience the first major light field capability - focusing after the fact. Focus and re-focus, anywhere in the picture. You can refocus your pictures at anytime, after the fact.

And focusing after the fact, means no auto-focus motor. No auto-focus motor means no shutter delay. So, capture the moment you meant to capture not the one a shutter-delayed camera captured for you."

Here's a photo of the new camera.

Here's a hands on video of the new camera.

Chief Justice Renato Corona fights back vs President Benigno Aquino

Chief Justice fights back, won't give up post

4:41 PM

By Edu Punay (The Philippine Star) Updated December 13, 2011 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Hours before the House of Representatives voted to impeach him yesterday, Chief Justice Renato Corona rallied the judiciary and his supporters to "remain ready and vigilant" against what he called a "scheme that will destroy democracy."

The first chief justice to be impeached broke his silence a week after getting a public tongue lashing from President Aquino, who accused him of undermining the integrity of the judiciary with his alleged partiality toward former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Critics consider Corona a midnight appointee because he assumed the post when Reynato Puno retired on May 17, a week after the 2010 elections. But the Supreme Court (SC) upheld Corona's appointment.

"I want all of you to know that your chief justice continues to be in command and will lead the fight against any and all who dare to destroy the court and the independence of the judiciary," he told justices and employees at the flag-raising ceremony at the Supreme Court yesterday.

"We do not want to see a constitutional crisis befall our democracy, but if we are challenged to defend our independence we shall not meekly walk away," the SC chief stressed. "My fellow court workers, we stand together."

Corona said he had opted to keep his silence despite the President's tirades and "to let things pass in the spirit of peace and in the spirit of Christmas," but when he learned of the "mobilization of a secret plan" to oust him "by any means fair or foul," he decided to make a move.

"My silence does not mean anything more than caution and patience. Let no one mistake my silence as a sign of weakness," he explained.

"I have been quietly preparing and will be ready to take more determined steps in the coming days," he revealed.

"Do not forget, I am here, I am not going anywhere. I am your defender and most of all I am your chief justice. Together we will face these challenges and fight all who dare to destroy the court and our system of justice under the Constitution," he told members of the judiciary.

The SC chief also reminded his men to "keep the administration of justice going and maintain fidelity to your duty to render efficient and impartial public service" and "perform your jobs and stick to your principles, to our principles."

He told them that their duty to the Filipino is "not borne of electoral campaigns or the quest for publicity" but to "uphold and defend the Constitution."

"In the words of Jose Rizal, it is a useless life that is not consecrated to a great ideal. It is like a stone wasted on the field without becoming the part of any edifice. You and I are but stones in this edifice called the Supreme Court," he said.

Corona also warned members of the judiciary not to let the "enemies of the court" divide them.

"By continuing with uninterrupted dedication to our work we will prove all our critics and detractors wrong," he said.

He called the alleged ouster plot "a great concern to the court."

On Sunday, SC spokesman Midas Marquez denounced the "attempt to initiate and railroad the impeachment proceedings against members of the court being labeled as enemies of the President."

"These plans pose direct threat to the independence of the court and the judiciary," Marquez said.

A source told The STAR over the weekend that Corona's impeachment would depend largely on how the high court would decide on the validity of the joint panel that filed charges of electoral sabotage against Arroyo. Officials from the Department of Justice and the Commission on Elections comprise the joint panel.

The Corona-led SC shot down Aquino's first executive order creating a truth commission to investigate alleged anomalies perpetrated by Arroyo and some of her officials.

More recently, the SC issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) on the Justice department's travel ban on Arroyo. But Justice Secretary Leila de Lima defied the TRO and ordered immigration officials to prevent Arroyo from boarding a plane bound for Hong Kong last Nov. 15. The former president wanted to travel abroad, purportedly to seek treatment for her troublesome cervical spine. Her political foes believe she wanted to leave the country to escape prosecution.

Miriam Santiago wins ICC seat

4:51 PM

Feisty Philippine Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago has "overwhelmingly" won a seat in the highly powerful International Criminal Court, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Tuesday.

DFA said Santiago is the first woman from an Asian developing state to join as a judge in the Netherlands-based international court.

ICC is an "independent, permanent court that tries persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes," according to the court's website.

Santiago reportedly topped the poll's first round, effectively gaining a seat with 79 votes out of 104 valid votes, which DFA said was "an indication of the strong support from States Parties."

DFA noted that to be elected, candidates must receive two-thirds majority of the total number of votes cast, mostly States Parties voting.

"She was the first to be elected out of 18 candidates vying for six seats on the Court. For the first round of voting, she bested candidates from every region," DFA said in a statement.

"This is the message that we emphasized in the campaign. We are pleased that the international community has listened to us. Indeed, it is a new day for the Philippines, a day of pride for our country and a day of honor, knowing that this is a tremendous responsibility and mandate placed upon our compatriot," DFA Secretary Albert del Rosario said.

Santiago recently went on a four-month campaign to get States Parties' support.

In October, Santiago said she would be resigning from the Senate should she win a seat in the ICC.

“I’ll have to resign [as senator]. Isn’t that good news for my enemies? I would have to live in The Hague. I will look like a European and speak like a European and I will be as snooty as a European when I come back," she reportedly said.

A Break-Up letter from an Upset customer

Dearest ChickBoy,

I've been a biggest fan of you. I love your chicks, I love your boys. I love your chicken and i love your baboys, I even love your nilasing na hipon and your sinigang sa miso na salmon. I chose to have an affair with you because you seemed to have a cool place plus the staff seems to be nice and definitely you've got good food! You were my trophy then. I tried to brag you around my friends.I can see how they envy me whenever i am with you.

"Mam, paltan nalang ho namin yung kangkong" what???

Strike 3!

So bumalik nga ko kinagabihan.. You're not getting my point.

Tapos in the end after more than 30 min of waiting. nag reklamo na ako at kailangan kong umalis.

At para sa yo CHICKBOY I'm ending this relationship! Gaya ni KC and Piolo, Ni Rhian at ni Mo twister I'm ending this relationship with a bang! Full of controversy.

Goodbye CHICKBOY may you rest in peace just like the poor HUMONGOUS CATERPILLAR WHICH COULD'VE BEEN A BEAUTIFUL MARIPOSA, ONLY IF I HADN'T EATEN IT.

Ultimate Ears 350vi Review

Wednesday, December 07, 2011 1:11 PM

I got myself a replacement earphones last week after my Sennheiser MM 50i died on me a few months ago. I've owned the Sennheiser for about 7 months, but while I was listening to some music and a phone call came in, it suddenly lost 90% of the volume. I thought my phone was shorted, but it's not. I loss all the bass on the left earphone and I can hardly hear anything on the right earphone. Basically, the Sennheiser MM 50i shorted while playing music and my phone rang.

I'm very disappointed. In my previous review of this Sennheiser, I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. Now, I'm downgrading it to 2 stars. Why not 1? It's still a good earphone, if it lasts. I've never had any earphones die on me, never. I've owned Sony earphones since the 1980's, it's still working brilliantly. This is the first time I had an earphone die on me.

So I started looking for a new set of earphones, I was trying to decide if I should just buy an Etymotic or Shure, but they were a bit expensive. I did have a old Shure E2C earphones which I was using in the meantime. It works great for noise isolation and sound quality. The only drawback is, there is no mic on this one so it's hard to use with a phone especially when your hands are full.

While browsing through the Apple Store, I found the Ultimate Ears 350vi on the shelf. I don't recall them having these before so it really grabbed my attention.

It was also on sale so I decided to pick one up to replace my Sennheiser.

Background

Ultimate Ears was started as custom in-ear monitors for musicians and is now part of Logitech. They make high end custom earphone but now they make consumer earphones for iPods, iPhones and other phones and MP3 players.

First test

When I first tried it on, it sounded better than my old Sennheiser. The bass was deeper than the Sennheiser, but not that deep. It just sounds a little more solid on the bass. I only listen to rock and roll music so I can't really comment on how it sounds when you play hip hop. But I'm more satisfied with the overall sound of the UE 350vi than the Sennheisers. And this isn't because the old ones shorted out.

The UE 350vi comes with five (5) silicon ear cushions from XXS to L and a hard case. I initially used the attached ear cushion which is the Small and I found that I get no noise isolation whatsoever. I tried almost all of the sizes until I found one that gave me the best noise isolation with the most comfortable fit. The size "S" was not very comfortable to use for me, it kept falling off and did not reduce any outside noise.

Once I found the proper ear cushions, the noise isolation got better. It's not a good as the noise isolation I get from the Sennheiser but the better sound makes up for it. The Shure E2C provides the best noise isolation because of the design, but it does hurt my ears when I wear it too long. The UE 350vi sits in my ear better than the Sennheisers because it is a bit bigger. The Sennheiser was a bit small and the design makes it sit too deep in my ear which I didn't really like.

Design

One thing I didn't like about the design with the UE 350vi is the earphone cables are equal length, so they dangle in front of you. If you happen to pull hard on them, they pop out of your ears. The Sennheiser MM 50i cables are of unequal length so the cords go around the back of your neck minimizing the chance of them popping out when you pull them.

The mic and control is a lot better on the UE 350vi compared to the MM 50i. You have volume control and the middle button has the same control as the iPhone earphones. Voice quality is clear and mic sensitivity is very good.

You can buy a pair of Comply Foam Tips for the UE 350 to get even better noise isolation. Comply Foam is not part of Logitech but rather a spin-off of 3M specializing in dynamic memory foam for earphone tips.

As I wear my UE 350vi, it starts feeling better and better to the point that I don't even notice wearing them. I can't say the same for my Shure E2C. I want to take them off after an hour of wearing them.

Sound

First of all, everybody's ear is different. There is no right or wrong earphones, some will work well for you, some won't. It's just the nature of our ears so you have to just keep testing them especially if you are using in-ear earphones. The fit could be wrong, the comfort is not right, or you just can't get the earphones to sit properly in your ear to get the best experience. In short, there's just too many factors that will affect your ability to enjoy in-ear earphones. Having said that, if you do get the proper fit, you can experience the full capability of your earphones.

That's what I discovered after playing around with several earphones. If it sits properly in your ears, you get the full bass you want and the highs as well. If not, sound leak will make it a horrible experience for you. Your only other alternative is to get custom made earphones or use over the ear headphones that covers your whole ear so they would sound like regular speakers.

Once I got the proper ear cushion on my UE 305vi, I got the right sound I was looking for in an earphone. The UE 350vi is more of a middle of the pack in performance. It's not too loud but not too soft. The bass is just right and not very heavy. In short, it doesn't thump your heart that much.

I also listen to audiobooks and the voice is very clear. Much clearer than what I get from Sennheiser and I have the volume up on the Sennheiser. Music by Queen, Tears of Fears and The Beatles comes out really really well and you can hear every instrument played. With the comfort of these earphones and the sound quality. It feels like they singing in front of you. It's really really good value for money.

The main drawback I see on the UE 350vi is the noise isolation. Even with the proper size ear cushions, the noise isolation is still not as good as the Sennheiser or the Shure E2C. There are some noise isolation, but not as much as those other earphones. The comfort and performance though outweighs that small drawback.

Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my UE 350vi. If I ever decide to buy a higher end earphone, Ultimate Ears would be one of my choices. I bought my pair on sale for $49.00. For the performance you get, I think it's well worth the money.

My jaw dropped when I saw this video.

Before the mid 2000s, pole dancing was mostly popular in strip clubs. But pole dancing is actually a form of performing art, a combination of dance and gymnastics. It involves dancing and performing acrobatic tricks with a vertical pole.

There are many professional competition held in many countries around the world and promoters of fitness competitions have been trying to change peoples’ perception of pole dance and to promote it as a legitimate form of dance and acrobatics.

Last Christmas - Various Artist

9:00 AM

I did not realize there were so many versions of this song. The best of course is still the original by Wham!

"Last Christmas" is a song by British pop duo Wham!, released on Epic Records in 1984. A classic.

For those who like the newer versions, here's the version by Taylor Swift.

And by Glee.

Last Christmas Lyrics by Wham!

Chorus:

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, You gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, You gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance but you still catch my eye
Tell me baby do you recognise me?
Well it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me

(Happy Christmas!) I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "I Love You" I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now I know you'd fool me again

Chorus

(Oooh. Oooh Baby)

A crowded room, friends with tired eyes
I'm hiding from you and your soul of ice
My God I thought you were someone to rely on
Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man undercover but you tore me apart
Oooh Oooh
Now I've found a real love you'll never fool me again

Chorus

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
(Gave you my heart)
A man undercover but you tore me apart
Next year
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
special
someone
someone
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
who'll give me something in return
I'll give it to someone
hold my heart and watch it burn
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
I've got you here to stay
I can love you for a day
I thought you were someone special
gave you my heart
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone
last Christmas I gave you my heart
you gave it away
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone

President Aquino Criticizes The Supreme Court In Front of Chief Justice Corona

Monday, December 05, 2011 3:42 PM

President Noynoy Aquino lambasted the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Renato Corona in a nationally televised public forum at the First National Criminal Justice Summit hosted by the Department of Justice at the Manila Hotel.

Mr. Aquino lectured Corona in his speech, telling him that the Supreme Court is accountable to the people and saying its power emanated from them.

“We have no plan to step on its rights or humiliate the credibility of anyone. But we have to go back to the main principle of our democracy. Those of us who took an oath to serve only owe it to one: you who are our boss, the Filipino people,” the President said.

“Now there is one public servant who owes a debt of gratitude not to the people who should be the source of our power, but to a patron who squeezed him into the position, will we rely on him to look at the interest of the people?” he added.

When asked for a reaction after President Aquino's speech criticizing the high court, Corona said, "Magpapasko na, hayaan na natin."

There were a lot of reactions on Twitter about the speech, some agreeing and some disagreeing with what President Aquino said.

Here are some of the reactions on Twitter after Karen Davila asked her followers what their thoughts are about the President's speech:

@harold_geronimo I admire PNoy. Bumabanat nang harap-harapan.

@guillmo I just thought-that for a President,he should have this stature and decorum. He just showed he was a Bully.

@impedrojuan05 opo! bilang Pangulo ng ating bansa may karapatan syang gawin yun, atleast di sya PLASTIC na Pangulo tulad ng iba dba?!

@kjsoriano may mga mabagal ang pick up,may patay malisya. Malinaw at tapatan.

Jim Paredes of Apo Hiking Society had this to say.

When you leave important things unsaid because of 'politeness', NOTHING changes. The truth will set you free although it hurts..

That's why crooks can hold their heads high in govt because we are all 'polite' and 'civil' to tell it like it is when it needs to be said.

Here is a video of a speech by President Aquino at the Makati Business Club on December 1, 2011 also criticizing the Supreme Court.

TouchFire: The Screen-Top Keyboard for iPad

11:43 AM

This is an interesting design project called the TouchFire.

From the website.

TouchFire puts the "touch" back into typing on an iPad. You can now feel where the keys are and rest your fingers on the home row, so you can type as fast and accurately as you can on a laptop. You can even type without looking at the screen. TouchFire cushions your fingers as you type, something both touch-typists and two-finger typists really appreciate. Typing on an iPad is no longer a pain!

TouchFire is ultra-thin and weighs less than an ounce. It attaches to the inside of the iPad cover and folds with the cover, so you can always keep TouchFire with your iPad without it getting in the way.

Band Aid was a British and Irish charity supergroup, founded in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia by releasing the record "Do They Know It's Christmas?" for the Christmas market that year. The single surpassed the hopes of the producers to become the Christmas number one on that release.

The record was released on November 29, 1984, and went straight to No. 1 in the UK singles chart, outselling all the other records in the chart put together. It became the fastest- selling single of all time in the UK, selling a million copies in the first week alone. It stayed at No. 1 for five weeks, selling over three million copies and becoming easily the biggest-selling single of all time in the UK.

Mo Twister and Rhian Ramos Video

Friday, December 02, 2011 8:12 PM

More showbiz controversies. This time it's Mo Twister who's real name is Mohan Gumatay and Rhian Ramos.

This video was supposedly leaked. This video was allegedly taped in a room of a posh hotel in Singapore on July 28, 2010, Gumatay is making a tearful confession about an abortion that actress Rhian Ramos, then his girlfriend, is going to have in an undisclosed location in the city state.

In his Twitter post, Mo Twister denied he was the one who leaked the video. He said, he "sold many of my things including computers that I had erased. Apparently, someone ‘repaired’ the erased files/hard drive and uploaded some personal files of mine. I feel terrible about it.”

He also apologized on his post saying “One thing is clear, I loved Rhian very much and what we went through traumatized me, as other recent incidents have.”

Rhian Ramos is a prized talent of GMA-7 and is being groomed as the next big star. Mo Twister used to be a GMA-7 talent before he moved to TV 5.

Mo Twister is popular for his radio program that has a segment making entertainment celebrities confess about their sex lives.

Steve Jobs' Vision of the World

11:58 AM

This video was taken from the Steve Jobs' documentary titled "One Last Thing".

The world as Steve Jobs saw it:

When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and you're life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money.

That's a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.

Once you learn that, you'll never be the same again.

Is Piolo Pascual Gay?

Thursday, December 01, 2011 6:26 PM

The breakup of KC Concepcion and Piolo Pascual started up the rumors about Piolo Pascual being gay again. Frankly I'm sick and tired of this Piolo and KC news. The other day, I was watching TV Patrol and for that half hour the three major news event was former President Gloria Arroyo house arrest. The disbarment case against Sec. De Lima and the break-up of Piolo and KC.

Guess which one had the longest airtime?

To tell you the truth, what does it matter if Piolo is gay? Would it make your life better knowing that? Filipinos can be very judgmental about gays. On one hand, they accept them if they're comedians or beauticians. But other than that, they won't accept them and ridicule them. Maybe because they feel like it hurts the Filipino macho image. Who knows?

Of course, there's this video going around about Piolo while watching the boxing match of Manny Pacquiao.

There's even a photo that is circulating around the Internet about proof that Piolo is gay. One example is this, where supposedly, Erik Santos has his arms around Piolo Pascual.

Piolo and Eric

People basically accepted the photo for what it is. But did it ever occur to anyone that maybe this photo has been Photoshopped? Think about it, why does Erik Santos' arms looks like a gorilla? Maybe because it's fake?

Could it be that the real photo is this?

Piolo and Eric Real

Makes you think twice doesn't it? Maybe Piolo is gay, but don't just accept things about what you see on the Internet. What if he is gay? Who cares? These people should get a life.

Palace announces 2012 holidays

5:09 PM

From the Inquirer.

What's interesting is that they actually have the Chinese New Year designated as a holiday as well. I believe this is the first time this has been done.

MANILA, Philippines—President Benigno Aquino III has declared a total of 16 official holidays for 2012, MalacaƱang announced Thursday.

Aquino signed Proclamation 95, which designated 10 regular holidays next year, five special non-working days and one special holiday.

The proclamation was in accordance with Republic Act 9492, known as the “Holiday Economics,” which was made into law in 2007.

Following are next year’s holidays:

A. Regular Holidays
New Year’s Day: January 1 (Sunday)
Maundy Thursday: April 5
Good Friday: April 6
Araw ng Kagitingan: April 9 (Monday)

Labor Day: May 1 (Tuesday)
Independence Day: June 12 (Tuesday)
National Heroes Day: August 27 (Last Monday of August)
Bonifacio Day: November 30 (Friday)
Christmas Day: December 25 (Tuesday)
Rizal Day: December 30 (Sunday)

B. Special (Non-Working) Days
Chinese New Year: January 23 (Monday)
Ninoy Aquino Day: August 21 (Tuesday)
All Saints Day: November 1 (Thursday)
Additional special (non-working) day: November 2 (Friday)
Last Day of the Year: December 31 (Monday

C. Special Holiday (for all schools)
EDSA Revolution Anniversary: February 25 (Saturday)

Chinese New Year, which will fall on January 23, 2012, may be declared as a special non-working day without detriment to public interest, the proclamation said.

The Chinese New Year is “ one of the most revered and festive events celebrated not only in China but also in the Philippines by both Chinese Filipinos and ordinary Filipinos as well; and the joint celebration is a manifestation of our solidarity with our Chinese Filipino brethren who have been part of our lives in many respects as a country and as a people,” it added.

November 2, 2012 will be declared as a special non-working day “to give full opportunity to our people to properly observe All Saints’ Day with all its religious fervor which invariably requires them to travel to and from different regions in the country.”

Traditionally, only November 1 (All Saints’ Day) is declared a holiday.

Meanwhile, the proclamations declaring national holidays for the observance of Eid’l Fitr and Eid’l Adha will be issued after it is determined in accordance with the Islamic calendar, the proclamation read.

The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos will issue the dates when will the Islamic holidays fall, it added.

The Department of Labor and Employment will promulgate the implementing guidelines for the proclamation, it said.

Philippines' biggest, most modern warship to be deployed

4:43 PM

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - Philippine Navy sailors on board the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar (PF 15) throw ropes as they dock during arrival ceremonies at Manila's pier Tuesday. AP

The Philippine Navy will finally deploy its biggest and most modern ship to date, the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar, to the West Philippine Sea this month.

Navy spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Omar Tonsay said the Gregorio Del Pilar is scheduled to be commissioned on December 14 at the Manila South Harbor Pier 13, with President Benigno Aquino III leading the ceremony.

Tonsay said in keeping with naval tradition, they would invite Del Pilar 's descendants to the event.

Del Pilar was one of the youngest generals who fought in the Philippine Revolution against colonial Spain. He was killed in the famed Battle of Tirad Pass during the Philippine-American War at age 24.

The Gregorio Del Pilar is a weather high endurance cutter which the Philippine Navy acquired from the US Coast Guard last July. It is armed and combat-ready.

The 95 crew members of the Philippine Navy led by Captain Alberto Cruz impressed top officials of the United States Navy with how quickly they learned how to operate one of the largest ships ever built for the US Coast Guard.

The ship underwent a 33-day voyage across the Pacific Ocean traveling 7,926 nautical miles before it arrived in the country on August 17.

It underwent refurbishments and repainting from white to gray.

Commissioning the Gregorio Del Pilar will formally place it under the service of the Philippine Navy.

"This means it can now be deployed," Tonsay said.

"She is already armed so she is combat-ready," he added. With Katherine Evangelista
