3 Cost Effective Ways to Solve Metro Manila's Traffic Problem

Image
The Facebook page of ANC 24/7 is asking for its reader's suggestion on how to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem. This got me thinking, "what is the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem?" It's easy to make suggestions, what's hard is the implementation and the cost of implementation. So what is the the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem and the most cost effective solution? Punitive Fines Add caption First of all, any implementation will definitely cost money, a lot of money. The cause of the traffic mess is the people themselves so it's only right that those causing the traffic problem should be fined and the fine should hurt. That way, the fines will pay for the cost of enforcing the law. The fines should start at P500 and goes up every week if you don't pay it within 15 days. To enforce this and prevent people from ignoring the fine. It will be tied to their driver's license or car registr

Ease donation rules—Filipino donors in HK

From the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Filipinos in Hong Kong who have gathered donations for survivors of tropical storm Ondoy are requesting the government to ease its requirement that all donations go through the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

In an e-mail, Daphne Ceniza said “many donors want to send their items to specific and monitor the goods at its receiving end but this cannot be done because of the rule that everything has to go through the DSWD.”

”How practical is this procedure? I can just imagine DSWD having its hands full now attending to the flood victims, does it have enough manpower to handle the processing of donated items?” she asked.

Ceniza proposed that consular posts, not just in Hong Kong, to be given the mandate to screen donors and shipment for tax exemption for this instance.

She said Filipinos in Hong Kong have been able to gather 53 balikbayan boxes for Manila, and have been able to convince freight forwarding companies to donate their services.

“They know the community better. They will know who is legitimate and who's not. Guidelines for screening of donors can be set to prevent abuse,” Ceniza suggested.

”The need is urgent. Government must streamline its operations if they want speedy delivery of service,” she said.

This is in response to the directive of GMA on Sept 29, 2009 here
A couple of reactions from the article were these.

Another reaction from another reader

VERY GOOD IDEA NG ARROYO ADMINISTRATION NA Lahat ng donations para sa mga biktima ng bagyo at pagbaha ay padaanin sa DSWD . Sigurado naman po na makakarating yan sa nasalanta ng bagyo at pagbaha pero SIGURADO RIN PO NA KAPAG IPINAMAHAGI NA YANG MGA DONATIONS NA YAN - NAKALAGAY NA YAN SA ISANG MAGANDA PLASTIC BAG AT MAY NAKATATAK ---- "TULONG MULA KAY GMA".

Of course, there's other readers on the other side of the fence.

To Facebook User: Ang tapang mong magsalita pro ba't nagtatago ka? libelous ang mga statements mo at mey halo pang conspiracy against the President of the Philippines ang her family. stupido ka, magpakilala ka at panindigan mong mga paninira mo.

I'm guessing a lot of people don't have a lot of trust in the government.
