3 Cost Effective Ways to Solve Metro Manila's Traffic Problem

Image
The Facebook page of ANC 24/7 is asking for its reader's suggestion on how to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem. This got me thinking, "what is the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem?" It's easy to make suggestions, what's hard is the implementation and the cost of implementation. So what is the the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem and the most cost effective solution? Punitive Fines Add caption First of all, any implementation will definitely cost money, a lot of money. The cause of the traffic mess is the people themselves so it's only right that those causing the traffic problem should be fined and the fine should hurt. That way, the fines will pay for the cost of enforcing the law. The fines should start at P500 and goes up every week if you don't pay it within 15 days. To enforce this and prevent people from ignoring the fine. It will be tied to their driver's license or car registr

‘Bourne Legacy’ director on Filipino actors: An embarrassment of riches

From the Inquirer . LOS ANGELES—In separate interviews recently, “The Bourne Legacy” director Tony Gilroy praised the pool of Filipino actors as “an embarrassment of riches,” while the film’s Oscar-nominated producer Frank Marshall described Palawan, one of the locations, as “the most beautiful place” he had ever been to. At a packed press screening in LA last week, we finally got to watch “The Bourne Legacy,” a tight action-thriller whose climactic last part (about 40 minutes) is set in various places in the Philippines. Some of the locations include the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Manila Yacht Club, the Metro Rail Transit station in Pasay, San Andres in Manila and Palawan province. To avoid spoilers, let’s just say the original story written by Tony—inspired by the “Bourne” series created by Robert Ludlum—involves complications arising from CIA efforts to eliminate everyone involved in Outcome, a program developed by the US Department of Defense to create better spies a

Aquino’s RH bill endorsement an open war on Church, bishops say

From the Inquirer . It’s now open war. Members of the influential Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Tuesday denounced President Benigno Aquino’s decision to push for the passage of the reproductive health (RH) bill during his State of the Nation Address (Sona) on Monday. Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles said the President’s open endorsement of the bill during his Sona was a declaration of “open war” against the Catholic Church. “Aquino declared an open war, a head-on collision against us and against the Catholic Church. So terrible, so blatantly Aquino missed the point,” Arguelles said in an interview. “We in the prolife movements are so disgusted with these vigorous pronouncements in support of responsible parenthood,” he added. Arguelles dismissed the President’s contention that slowing down the country’s population growth would benefit the nation. In contrast, the prelate said, the country’s booming population would drive its economy. Real face

1904 Chinese Map Showing No Ownership of Scarborough Shoal

Image
I saw this on Facebook . Not sure if this is true, but it is compelling evidence. Here's the story. A Han-Chinese map of China published in 1904 reveals that China stretched as far south as Hainan Island, and that Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands did not belong to China. Shanghai Publishing House printed the map whose Vietnamese name is “Hoàng triều trực tỉnh địa dư toàn đồ” (Map of all Chinese provinces). After holding it for 30 years, Dr. Mai Hong, former head of the Library of the Institute for the Study of Chinese and Demotic Scripts and Cultures, has decided to release the historical evidence. Hong recently sat down with Tuoi Tre for an interview about the map: How did you get this map? I got this map when I administered a library of Chinese and Demotic Script books (now Institute for the Study of Chinese and Demotic Scripts and Cultures) in 1977. At that time, collecting maps was not our administrative function. However, to my surprise, an elder

London Concert Organizers CUT OFF Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney's Jam

Image
From the Gothamist . Bruce Springsteen headlined last night's Hard Rock Calling concert in London and brought a special guest, (Sir) Paul McCartney, for the close. Yet the two rock legends were treated like rubbish when organizers cut off power during their version of "Twist and Shout" because they went past the curfew. E Street Band member Stevie Van Zandt sent out some furious Tweets, including, "One of the great gigs ever in my opinion. But seriously, when did England become a police state?" The concert's website described the incident, "With an epic finale imminent, Bruce saves the biggest surprise ‘til last, inviting Sir Paul McCartney out to close with I Saw Her Standing There and Twist and Shout, before an amplifier shutdown, the band having pushed their curfew restriction too far, forces an abrupt end to an otherwise glorious performance." Apparently Springsteen's performance was supposed to end at 10:15 p.m., but it actually went p

Councilor’s son sued for Citibank theft

Finally, some news about the VP of Citibank that stole millions I posted 2 years ago. From the Inquirer . The Department of Justice (DoJ) has ordered the filing of 87 counts of qualified theft against the son of Manila Councilor Bernie Ang who allegedly pocketed close to P138 million in bank deposits. Francis Bryan Ang, 38, reportedly fled the country after officials of Citibank—where he worked as assistant vice president of the Citigold wealth management unit— discovered in 2010 that he had been transferring the money of his clients into his personal account. However, the DOJ panel headed by Senior Assistant State Prosecutor Ma. Emilia Victorio dismissed the complaint of estafa against the younger Ang for lack of evidence. At the same time, it absolved his coaccused Oliver Salud, Sherjack Siao, Joanne Salud, Joanne Karla Uy, Robinso Siao, Steven Uy, Philip Keith Ang, Esther Gobio Ang, Antonio Samson and Belina Cancio of any complicity in the fraudulent transactions. Dolphy The King of Philippine Comedy Dies

Image
From the Inquirer . MANILA, Philippines—Actor-comedian Rodolfo “Dolphy” Quizon died Tuesday night, his son told reporters. Eric Quizon, who has acted as spokesman for the family, said Dolphy left at 8:34 p.m. following a cardiac arrest. “He lived a full life. He is at rest. He is at peace,” said Quizon hours after news of his father first broke on the social media network Twitter. Quizon said his father “knew as he was going how much the country loved him and knew that everyone was praying for him”. “If he could he would have stayed so just he could thank you personally,” said Quizon of Dolphy who has been confined at the Makati Medical Center since June 9 for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Quizon said that while his father’s “spirit was strong his body has so weakened he had to go”. “On behalf of everyone who loved him — my brothers, sisters, Zsa Zsa [Padilla], we all thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” said Quizon. He asked that the people “pray fo

However, since they are in a library, they have to be as quiet as possible. If they make too much noise, they lose. Watch.

Philippines Has Highest Teen Pregnancy Rate In Asia

Image
The Philippines has the highest number of teenage mothers in South East Asia. The country's population continues to grow by two million people every year, with the number of teenage mothers rising by 70 per cent in 10 years. Although sex education is controversial in the mostly Roman Catholic country, the 200,000 teen pregnancies each year is fuelling calls to educate young women about birth control. Al Jazeera's Marga Ortigas reports from Manila. Here's the list from Pro RH Bill on Facebook.

May Pasok Ba

The recent torrential rains in Manila had parents angry again at the slow response of school and local officials to declare whether there are classes or not. The schools finally declared that there will be no classes by noon... when the children are already in school! Every single year it's like this since what? The 1970s? I don't get it. Parents, please also think, if you think there's too much rain and it would put your child in danger of either being stranded or be like what happened with Ondoy, stay home. Missing one class is not going to affect your child. Of course, because of that, these memes came out. Here's the message from the Department of Education. Department of Education reiterates suspension of classes now lies with LGUs (Local Government Units) especially this rainy season. AUTOMATIC cancellation of classes during typhoons will still be based on the storm signal sent out by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Admi
