3 Cost Effective Ways to Solve Metro Manila's Traffic Problem

Image
The Facebook page of ANC 24/7 is asking for its reader's suggestion on how to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem. This got me thinking, "what is the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem?" It's easy to make suggestions, what's hard is the implementation and the cost of implementation. So what is the the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem and the most cost effective solution? Punitive Fines Add caption First of all, any implementation will definitely cost money, a lot of money. The cause of the traffic mess is the people themselves so it's only right that those causing the traffic problem should be fined and the fine should hurt. That way, the fines will pay for the cost of enforcing the law. The fines should start at P500 and goes up every week if you don't pay it within 15 days. To enforce this and prevent people from ignoring the fine. It will be tied to their driver's license or car registr

La Luna - Pixar Short

Image
I found this wonderful short animation by Pixar called La Luna. It's has great story like one you'll get from a children's book. The number one reason Pixar is so good is not because of their 3D animation, but their storyline. Watch.

Steve Jobs' Yacht Venus Unveiled in Aalsmeer, The Netherlands

Image
On October 28th Steve Jobs' envisioned yacht Venus was unveiled in Aalsmeer, The Netherlands. According to reports , the roughly 80-meter long hull of the ship is made completely of aluminum, while huge plate windows adorn the wheelhouse, saloon and main deck entrances, giving the ship a clean, open appearance. Continuing the spartan styling inside, the wheelhouse uses seven 27-inch iMacs running navigation, systems control and other seafaring software to assist in operating Venus.

Green Screen Technology

Image
Ever wonder how your favorite TV shows can afford to shoot on locations all around the world? Do they look for a place nearby that looks similar to where they want to shoot? For example, Downtown Toronto looks similar to New York, but it's cheaper to shoot there than in New York so some TV shows that are set in New York actually shoot in Toronto. For example, the TV show X Files if any of you remember was shot entirely in Vancouver, Canada and around Vancouver even though the scenes where supposed to be all over the United States. However, TV shows now shoots are set at all around the world specially action or spy series like "24". So how can they afford to shoot on location and still keep the series schedule? Well, the answer is, they shoot a lot of green screen. I found this video showing how they use it on your favorite shows. It's really interesting to learn.

Fra Lippo Lippi

Image
Fra Lippo Lippi was a popular band in the Philippines in the late 1980s. According to Wikipedia "The band's popularity in the Philippines prompted them to tour the country in 1988. In Manila, their shows sold out six times over two weekends." Here are some of their most popular songs and a couple that I like that were not as popular. Brings back memories...

Ferdinand Marcos Compared to Other Presidents

Image
I saw this on the Pres. Ferdinand Emmanuel E. Marcos' Facebook Page . It shows the academic achievement of former President Marcos in scoring the highest grade ever achieved in the Bar Exams with a 98.01% average. It also shows the budget of Marcos over 20 years compared to the budget of President Cory Aquino and President Fidel Ramos according to a report by the National Statistic's Office. I'm not sure if those numbers were adjusted for inflation and devaluation, so I won't really put much faith on those number. But it is interesting to know.

Cranky Old Man

Saw this article on Google+ under Compassion . When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home in an Australian country town, it was believed that he had nothing left of any value. Later, when the nurses were going through his meager possessions, They found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital. One nurse took her copy to Melbourne. The old man's sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas editions of magazines around the country and appearing in mags for Mental Health. A slide presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent, poem. And this old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the author of this 'anonymous' poem winging across the Internet. Cranky Old Man What do you see nurses? . . .. . .What do you see? What are you thinking .. . when you're looking at me? A cranky old man, . . . . . .not very wise,

The Real Bears

Image
This is the unhappy truth about soda: http://therealbears.org It wasn't so bad when soft drinks were the occasional treat. But now sugary drinks are the number one source of calories in the American diet. With one third of America overweight and another third obese, it's a wonder anyone is still swallowing what the soda companies are selling. Big soda companies have billions of dollars to tell their story, but we have each other. Oh, and we have the truth. Help The Real Bears spread the truth about soda by sharing the film.

Grandma Still Drives

Got this from an e-mail. Grandma is eighty-eight years old and still drives her own car. She writes: Dear Granddaughter, The other day I went up to our local Christian book store and saw a 'Honk if you love Jesus' bumper sticker. I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting. So, I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper. Boy, am I glad I did! What an uplifting experience followed. I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good he is, and I didn't notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn't honked, I'd never have noticed. I found that lots of people love Jesus! While I was sitting there, the guy behind me started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, 'For the love of God!' 'Go! Go! Go! Jesus Ch

Felix Baumgartner's Supersonic Freefall From 128k Feet

Image
After flying to an altitude of 39,045 meters (128,100 feet) in a helium-filled balloon, Felix Baumgartner completed a record breaking jump for the ages from the edge of space, exactly 65 years after Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier flying in an experimental rocket-powered airplane. Felix reached a maximum of speed of 1,342.8 km/h (833mph) through the near vacuum of the stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere later during his 4:20 minute long freefall. The 43-year-old Austrian skydiving expert also broke two other world records (highest freefall, highest manned balloon flight), leaving the one for the longest freefall to project mentor Col. Joe Kittinger. Here's the video on the test jump.

Beauty and Madness by Fra Lippo Lippi

Image
Fra Lippo Lippi was very popular in the Philippines during the 1980s with several hit songs. This is one of my most favorite Fra Lippo Lippi song. Great lyrics and great piano music. Here's another version with a saxophone version. Here's a live version that I found. From Wikipedia . Fra Lippo Lippi is a New Wave band from Norway. They had several hits in the 1980s, such as "Shouldn't Have to Be Like That", "Everytime I See You" and "Light and Shade", and recorded a new album as late as 2002. The band name is derived from Robert Browning's poem about the Renaissance painter Filippo Lippi.

RH bill, Ateneo, and La Salle: Of lemons and cowards

Saw this editorial from UST's school newspaper The Varsitarian . It has created a lot of controversy when the writer or writers called the Ateneo and De La Salle professors “intellectual pretenders and interlopers" when they stood for the RH Bill. It was quite brave of the professors to stand for what they believe in considering they are working for a religious school who are most likely . But was The Varsitarian correct to label these professors as such? The Varsitarian in the editorial states that "Professors who are affiliated with UST must respect the stand of the University against the RH bill as they are part of an institution which is fundamentally bound with Catholic faith and teachings. If UST professors don’t agree with the stand of the CBCP, then they have a problem. The bishops are the successors of the Christ’s apostles and possess the Magisterium, the teaching authority of the Church." I don't see why just because you work for a certain compan

Facebook Status Turns Black

Image
In protest to the new Cybercrime Law that will take effect tomorrow, people are calling for the blackout of their profile photos to protest the bill. Here's a sample. Some have called for their status to be blacked out as well. Like this. ██████ ██████ ██ █████ ██████ ██████ █████████ ███████ █████ ██████████████ █████ ███████ ██████████████ ██████████ ███████ █████. [STATUS BLOCKED] (ʀᴀ ɴᴏ. 10175) this is how our status and comments will look like tomorrow once the cybercrime law takes effect... This law is affecting everyone online. Here is the person everyone is blaming for the insertion of libel in the Cybercrime Bill. And here are the others who supported the bill. Here's the real problem with the new Cybercrime Bill according to TG Guingona . So starting tomorrow, either stand up or watch out what you say online. I can and will be used against you in the court of law.

Cybercrime Law Goes Into Effect Oct 3, 2012

Image
From We Support Anonymous Philipppines . FB 'likes', shares could be grounds for libel, says Sen. Guingona MANILA, Philippines - Sharing content, or even just clicking the 'Like' button on Facebook, may be grounds for libel under the recently enacted Cybercrime Prevention Act. But Senator Teofisto Guingona III said Thursday the law is so broad and vague it isn't clear who can or should be sued. “The law is very broad,” Guingona, who opposes the new law, said. “If you click like, you can be sued, and if you share, and continuously re-share information, you can also be sued. Saka sino ang liable? Hindi klaro eh. ‘Yung original na nag-post? ‘Yung nag-share? ‘Yung nag-tweet? Kahit nga ikaw, mag-post ka ng simpleng ‘hehehe’ di ba? Ibig sabihin nu’n, sangayon ka (And who is liable? It isn’t clear. The one who made the original post? The ones who share? The ones who tweet. Even you, if you post a simple, ‘hehehe,’ right? Does that mean you agree)? Are you liable? So

PNP FB Admin First to Abuse Cybercrime Law

Image
You know that Cybercrime Law that was just passed? Well, here it is in practice. It's not even in effect yet but the PNP is already investigating someone who made a negative comment on the PNP's Facebook page. From FilipinoFreeThinkers.org The Cybercrime law hadn’t even taken effect, but that didn’t stop the Philippine National Police (PNP) from abusing it. At least that’s what the admin of their Facebook page did when they encountered an unwelcome comment. The comment was a response to PNP’s post about criminology students doing poorly in English. Here’s a screenshot just in case they delete the comment, too: I say “too” because right now these are the only comments I can read out of the ones included in a screenshot that is spreading all over Facebook. Here it is, just in case they get Facebook to take it down as well: As several commenters have pointed out, the law doesn’t take effect till Wednesday, October 3. Yet the “CIDG Anti Transnational Crime is now condu
