What SOPA and PIPA are at face value and what they could end up enabling.

EXCLUSIVE: Internet sites on their SOPAStrike may be conducting a blackout but Hollywood studios are conducting a boycott. I’ve learned that Hollywood studio chiefs individually and as a group are drawing a line in the sand on the piracy issue with the Obama re-election campaign and refusing to give any more donations.  The blowup came after President Obama on Saturday dashed moguls’ hopes that he would remain on the sidelines in the dispute over the U.S. House Of Representatives’ Stop Online Piracy Act and the U.S. Senate’s Protect IP Act. Tell Congress not to censor the internet NOW! - fightforthefuture.org/pipa PROTECT-IP is a bill that has been introduced in the Senate and the House and is moving quickly through Congress. It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting "creativity". The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites-- they just have to convince a judge that the site is "dedicated to copyright infringement." The government has already wrongly shut down sites without any recourse to the site owner. Under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill. According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost us $47 million tax dollars a year — that's for a fix that won't work, disrupts the internet, stifles innovation, shuts out diverse voices, and censors the internet. Have you heard of SOPA/PIPA? SOPA is the Stop Online Piracy Act and PIPA is the Protect Intellectual Property Act. A lot of company is opposed to it like Google, Wikipedia and Facebook. I can't say I fully understand it myself. But from what I know, it means that you can be sued or penalized if you run a website like a blog, and you have a comment section you're going to have even more problems. How? If you happen to share something that has a potential copyright like a song, you can be shut down or sued. If your readers happen to comment on something and share something with a potential copyright on the comment, you can be shut down as well even if you were not responsible for it. See, it doesn't have to be you who infringed on a copyright, it can be your readers or commenters. You're still responsible for it. SOPA and PIPA are two examples of recent legislation that is lethal to the internet as we know it. The internet rose up and is on its way to successfully fighting them off, but we need to stay vigilant. The only way to prevent legislation like this from being passed in the future is to call your Congressmen and tell them. Make it clear that you don't support SOPA, you don't support PIPA, and that you won't support future legislation that damages the stability of the internet.
