3 Cost Effective Ways to Solve Metro Manila's Traffic Problem

The Facebook page of ANC 24/7 is asking for its reader's suggestion on how to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem.

This got me thinking, "what is the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem?" It's easy to make suggestions, what's hard is the implementation and the cost of implementation. So what is the the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem and the most cost effective solution?

Punitive Fines
First of all, any implementation will definitely cost money, a lot of money. The cause of the traffic mess is the people themselves so it's only right that those causing the traffic problem should be fined and the fine should hurt. That way, the fines will pay for the cost of enforcing the law.
The fines should start at P500 and goes up every week if you don't pay it within 15 days. To enforce this and prevent people from ignoring the fine. It will be tied to their driver's license or car registration. They cannot renew their d…

Retrieve Your Legal Data From

After the Justice Department indicted the top officials of the Hong Kong-based file-sharing site on Jan. 19 and ordered a server purge, legal users of the site have been scrambling to retrieve their data.
Threat Level's David Kravets reported Jan. 31 that "a scheduled purging of Megaupload’s data was tentatively shelved Tuesday to give its millions of account holders an opportunity to attempt to retrieve their content from the file-sharing service." The hosting companies possessing Megaupload customer's data could begin purging data as soon as Feb. 2, as the Justice Department has frozen the Megaupload administrators' assets so they can't pay their hosting bills. However, it remains unclear how much time users actually have to safely remove their data from the service before the cloud evaporates.
If you are one of the millions of innocent Megaupload account holders and are wondering how to get your data back, here are …

Modus Operandi Sa Bus (Metro Manila)

Just wanted to share this.
AKALA KO AKO LANG!...UN PALA MERON PANG IBA NA NABIBIKTIMA NG GANITONG SISTEMA...PAANO NA KUNG UN LANG ANG NATITIRA MONG PERA AT MALAYO PA ANG PUPUNTAHAN MO...kawawa ka naman....maglalakad ka...(based on my own experience sa isang aircon bus....)

So, pagdating ng VV Soliven... lumipat ako ng upuan (3rows before the driver , at the right side of the bus). Pagdating ng SEC (near ortigas ave.) kinukuha ko …

New P150 Bill?

Looks like the BSP is coming up with a new P150 bill to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal.
Update: It looks like this P150 is not going to be issued after all.

According to the commenter "Pinoy Numismatist Network"
"That 150 Rizal bill was an actual design proposal to BSP early in 2011, but wasn’t approved. Eventually, we ended up with a medal and a “1-piso Rizal commemorative coin”. No actual paper money were made only an image which made viral through the net."

You think you're in shape? I bet you can't beat this guy. He's 91 years old apparently. Of course, he also probably injected himself with HGH. But still impressive.

You know what's also impressive? Sylvester Stallone. He's 65 years old and he's what he looks like now.

Note: I have to apologize, both photos have been removed from the source. So as a replacement, I give you a video of Sylvester Stallone working out.

Binondo Camera Syndicate Caught on CCTV

There's a lot of these syndicates in the Philippines. Whenever you're out, either leave your bags in your room or make sure you put them under your table in between your legs when you're out eating so you can feel it or place it somewhere you can keep an eye on it all the time.

They say this happened in Binondo. But I don't know which restaurant.

The full video is somewhere on Facebook. It's 15 minutes long. Took the criminals about 10 minutes to set up before they got to the bag.

Dedicated Animals Only Bridge

This is a bridge crossing the highway in Banff, Alberta in Canada. Apparently, the Trans-Canada highway was built across the natural crossing of these Elks and a lot of animals and drivers got killed when these animals were crossing the highway during their migration.

A bridge was built for the animals to cross so they and the drivers don't get hurt. It took some years, but the Elks have now learned to cross the bridge instead of the highway.
According to Snopes, it's not really a bridge dedicated for animals but a bridge for Canadian Pacific Railway.

Interesting just the same.

Of Politics and the Rule of Law in the Philippines

From the Huffington Post.

The impeachment of incumbent Philippine Chief Justice Renato Corona has commenced in the Philippine Senate, with the customary fanfare one would expect in Manila. Consistent with the circus-like atmosphere that has prevailed throughout the course of former President Arroyo's prosecution for alleged corruption and electoral manipulation while she was president, pro- and anti-Arroyo forces were out in force. The proceedings may ultimately become a commentary on whether the Rule of Law is taking substantial root in the Philippine judicial and political process, or whether pretensions to reform remain nothing more than political machinations dressed up in the emperor's new clothes.

Depending on one's viewpoint, Corona's impeachment may prove to be the crowning achievement of the so-called 'Davide Watch' -- the eponymous description given to the vision of former Chief Justice of the Philippines Hilario G. Davide Jr. (1998 to 2005) who, duri…

SOPA and PIPA Explain by Khan Academy

What SOPA and PIPA are at face value and what they could end up enabling.

Hollywood Moguls Stopping Obama Donations Because Of President’s Piracy Stand: “Not Give A Dime Anymore”

EXCLUSIVE: Internet sites on their SOPAStrike may be conducting a blackout but Hollywood studios are conducting a boycott. I’ve learned that Hollywood studio chiefs individually and as a group are drawing a line in the sand on the piracy issue with the Obama re-election campaign and refusing to give any more donations.  The blowup came after President Obama on Saturday dashed moguls’ hopes that he would remain on the sidelines in the dispute over the U.S. House Of Representatives’ Stop Online Piracy Act and the U.S. Senate’s Protect IP Act. In a posting on the White House web site, three of the Obama administration’s top officials for Internet and intellectual property matters said that  they share many of the concerns that the Internet community has about the Hollywood-supported bills. The trio said that they “will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.” Intellectual…

First day of Corona impeach trial filled with ironies, bereft of drama

From the Inquirer.

The first day of Chief Justice Renato Corona’s trial was filled with ironies but bereft of the highly charged political drama that engulfed the nation 12 years ago, when then President Joseph Estrada went on trial for almost the same impeachable offenses.

Unlike the opening of the Estrada trial on Dec. 7, 2001, the hearing on Monday cannot be characterized as a political circus.

While both the prosecution and defense panels had traded barbs through the media in the weeks leading up to the Corona trial, there were no such fireworks on the Senate floor when the contending parties delivered their opening statements.

Unexpectedly, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile stole the thunder from former Supreme Court Associate Justice Serafin Cuevas, head of the defense panel, and Iloilo Representative Niel Tupas Jr., the chief prosecutor of the House of Representatives.

Enrile, a veteran lawyer and defense minister in the Marcos dictatorship, took full control of the proceeding…

PROTECT IP / SOPA Breaks The Internet

Tell Congress not to censor the internet NOW! -

PROTECT-IP is a bill that has been introduced in the Senate and the House and is moving quickly through Congress. It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting "creativity". The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites-- they just have to convince a judge that the site is "dedicated to copyright infringement."

The government has already wrongly shut down sites without any recourse to the site owner. Under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost us $47 million tax dollars a year — that's for a fix that won't work, disrupts the internet, stifles innovation, shuts out diverse voices, and censors the internet. This bill is …

Funny thing is, if SOPA is passed. You won't see Hitler get angry at anything anymore.

Why SOPA Is Dangerous

Have you heard of SOPA/PIPA? SOPA is the Stop Online Piracy Act and PIPA is the Protect Intellectual Property Act. A lot of company is opposed to it like Google, Wikipedia and Facebook.

I can't say I fully understand it myself. But from what I know, it means that you can be sued or penalized if you run a website like a blog, and you have a comment section you're going to have even more problems. How?

If you happen to share something that has a potential copyright like a song, you can be shut down or sued. If your readers happen to comment on something and share something with a potential copyright on the comment, you can be shut down as well even if you were not responsible for it. See, it doesn't have to be you who infringed on a copyright, it can be your readers or commenters. You're still responsible for it.

It's basically a censor for the Internet like how China censors the Internet.

Here's an article from Mashable that I found that explains SOPA/PIPA very …

The Day The LOLcats Died

SOPA and PIPA are two examples of recent legislation that is lethal to the internet as we know it. The internet rose up and is on its way to successfully fighting them off, but we need to stay vigilant.

The only way to prevent legislation like this from being passed in the future is to call your Congressmen and tell them. Make it clear that you don't support SOPA, you don't support PIPA, and that you won't support future legislation that damages the stability of the internet.

Samsung's Transparent Smart Window at CES 2012

Samsung's Transparent Window got a lot of attention at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Watch this video to find out why!

They say you can use this to check your Twitter account, do your homework and check recipes. While this technology is cool, I don't think I want to do my homework standing up facing the window or go to my window to check my recipe while I'm cooking.

Other than the novelty of it, I don't find any practical use for this unless you can find a way to incorporate this to the design of your home and not as part of a window. It would probably work great as a part of a partition wall or maybe a smaller size to be placed on a fridge or bathroom mirror.

But I still want this for Christmas!

The Show

I watch Moneyball starring Brad Pitt last night and there was this wonderful song called "The Show" in the movie. I found out the original singer was Lenka and the girl playing Brad Pitt's daughter who sang the song in the movie is Kerris Dorsey.

I read the book first before watching the movie, but I must say, the movie itself was also wonderful. It has been nominated for a Golden Globe.

While both versions are good, I think one is better than the other.

Here's the original by Lenka.

Here's the one from the movie Moneyball sang by Kerris Dorsey.

I like the movie version better. I think the girl's voice is beautiful. Which one do you think is best?

Paper Folding Record

It was thought that you can't fold a paper more than 7 times.

On December 4, 2011 seventeen St. Mark's students led by St. Mark's mathematics teacher Dr. James Tanton succeeded in setting a new paper folding record of 13 stable folds using just over 10 miles (53,000 feet) of toilet paper and the 3rd floor of MIT's famous Infinite Corridor. The St. Mark's folding team were the guests of MIT's origami club, OrigaMIT. The exercise dramatically demonstrates exponential decay as the 10 miles of paper, after 13 folds, is now about 5 feet long and 2-and-a-half feet high (with 8129 layers)

My hero!

Before you get too excited. Here's the description.

How To Touch 1000 Pairs of Boobs In Public & Only Get 1 Slap @1:57.

This video is about a light hearted funny prank where permission was obtained from all girls who participated. All girls who agreed to be touched are above the age of consent. The video is NOT the work of the porn industry and in NO WAY suggests that it's ok to walk up to any girl and touch her boobs or any other body parts WITHOUT permission. WARNING: Apart from badly upsetting somebody, to do this WITHOUT consent is a serious offence, possibly resulting in a criminal conviction and being listed in a sex offender's register.

Although this video was made as an election stunt in Moscow, praise should go to the team who persevered to complete a simple, but entertaining social experiment. They had to get past 7000 rejections. The lucky Russian guy who did the touching, Sam Nickel, then shook hands with Vladimir Putin to "zap him with power …
