3 Cost Effective Ways to Solve Metro Manila's Traffic Problem

Image
The Facebook page of ANC 24/7 is asking for its reader's suggestion on how to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem. This got me thinking, "what is the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem?" It's easy to make suggestions, what's hard is the implementation and the cost of implementation. So what is the the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem and the most cost effective solution? Punitive Fines Add caption First of all, any implementation will definitely cost money, a lot of money. The cause of the traffic mess is the people themselves so it's only right that those causing the traffic problem should be fined and the fine should hurt. That way, the fines will pay for the cost of enforcing the law. The fines should start at P500 and goes up every week if you don't pay it within 15 days. To enforce this and prevent people from ignoring the fine. It will be tied to their driver's license or car registr...

No Classed on Monday due to Heavy Rains

Image
No classes in some parts of Manila on Monday, July 30, 2012 due to heavy rains. Here are the list from various sources. From DepEd's Twitter account . Here is PAGASA's flood monitor map. As usual, classes for college level students are not suspended, or at least not yet. I think they believe college students are waterproof.

May Pasok Ba

The recent torrential rains in Manila had parents angry again at the slow response of school and local officials to declare whether there are classes or not. The schools finally declared that there will be no classes by noon... when the children are already in school! Every single year it's like this since what? The 1970s? I don't get it. Parents, please also think, if you think there's too much rain and it would put your child in danger of either being stranded or be like what happened with Ondoy, stay home. Missing one class is not going to affect your child. Of course, because of that, these memes came out. Here's the message from the Department of Education. Department of Education reiterates suspension of classes now lies with LGUs (Local Government Units) especially this rainy season. AUTOMATIC cancellation of classes during typhoons will still be based on the storm signal sent out by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Admi...

Tuition Cost In The Philippines

Image
I found this database from GMA.TV about the cost of tuition in private schools in the Philippines from prep school to high school. Ridiculous isn't it?

PUP Student Protest

Here's the video showing the PUP Students who smashed chairs and desk protesting the 2000% increase in their tuition. What I'm wondering is, if they are angry of the huge increase in their tuition which is P12/unit going to P200/unit, why would smashing chairs and tables be the answer to that? Wouldn't the school have to replace those and wouldn't it take money to replace those as well? Where would the school get the money? Oh right, from the student's tuition! Dumb asses. There are better ways of protesting than destroying property. Destroying property just lowers your bargaining position. And they call themselves educated. That's the most uneducated way of protesting. I admire that fact that they want to fight against tuition increase. I have no problem with that. But they have to be both reasonable in their demands and how they protest. For P12/unit, what kind of education can you expect? Sure it's government subsidized. But haven't they heard of infl...

Here's a list of schools damaged by Typhoon Ondoy that flooded Metro Manila on Sept 26, 2009 as compiled by the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Perhaps someone could help and adopt one of these schools? http://media.inquirer.net/inquirer/media/List-of-Metro-Manila-damaged-schools.pdf

Classes in both private and public schools in Metro Manila will resume on Monday except in schools still being used as evacuation centers, Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said Saturday. Details from the Philippine Daily Inquirer .

Teaching

I've been thinking about school a lot lately. Mostly because my son is already in school and partly thinking how I can make his school experience better and instill in him the love for learning. I borrow books from the library every week and we make sure to read to him every night. Because of this routine we did since he was old enough to listen to stories, around 2 or 2 and a half years old, he now has the habit that he has to be read something every night before he will go to bed. So how does this relate to why I'm thinking about school? Partly it's because of my experience with teachers while I was in school. I never really had any good teachers I can think of except for the two I had in my 3rd year of high school. One is Mr. Tumambing who was our Chemistry teacher and the other is Ms. Go who was our Geometry teacher. I would say that both of them inspired me to do very well in their subjects. Mind you, I'm not an A student, most of my grades were just above passing,...
