3 Cost Effective Ways to Solve Metro Manila's Traffic Problem

Image
The Facebook page of ANC 24/7 is asking for its reader's suggestion on how to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem. This got me thinking, "what is the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem?" It's easy to make suggestions, what's hard is the implementation and the cost of implementation. So what is the the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem and the most cost effective solution? Punitive Fines Add caption First of all, any implementation will definitely cost money, a lot of money. The cause of the traffic mess is the people themselves so it's only right that those causing the traffic problem should be fined and the fine should hurt. That way, the fines will pay for the cost of enforcing the law. The fines should start at P500 and goes up every week if you don't pay it within 15 days. To enforce this and prevent people from ignoring the fine. It will be tied to their driver's license or car registr...

Atty Jose Midas P. Marquez Press Conference

Image
This video has been going around the net lately. It's the reaction of Supreme Court spokesperson Atty. Jose Midas P. Marquez when a mic fell during his press conference. Because of his reaction, there's been speculation that he's gay. It doesn't really matter if he's gay, I just find his reaction funny.

Arroyo Faces More Troubles

Image
As if her troubles were not enough, former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will be slapped Tuesday with a civil case for her alleged role in the gruesome Maguindanao massacre, a lawyer of the victims said Monday. Arroyo, who is under hospital arrest in Taguig City on charges of electoral sabotage, is also facing plunder charges in the Office of the Ombudsman. A lawmaker and two other complainants said that while Arroyo had been charged with electoral sabotage, there was still a need to make her accountable for alleged acts of corruption during her nine-year tenure in Malacañang. The three asked the Office of the Ombudsman on Monday to immediately resolve the plunder case against Arroyo over the scuttled $329-million National Broadband Network (NBN) deal. Harry Roque, who represents the kin of 13 media workers and two bystanders slain in the massacre on Nov. 23, 2009, said his clients would ask the Quezon City Regional Trial Court to order the f...

We should have done better, says negotiator

From the Inquirer . Romeo Salvador, one of the two police negotiators in the Aug. 23, 2010, hostage drama, on Tuesday stood on the same spot where last year he was filled with hope that negotiations with the hostage-taker would succeed. “I thought I would just offer a simple prayer, walk to the site and leave. But it was very hard for me. My knees shook and I was trembling as I was walking to the spot,” Salvador said in Filipino. He approached the shrine of flowers and candles—on the exact spot where the tourist bus had stood—intending to offer a prayer and then leave, not wanting to attract the attention of the survivors and relatives of the victims who were holding a remembrance ceremony at the site. But just as Salvador feared, he was recognized by some members of the local and foreign media. A Hong Kong reporter angrily asked him: “Why haven’t you resigned?” Another foreign reporter said: “Why are you still a negotiator?” One local television reporter simply asked, “Why...

Why the secrecy in the printing of new currency?

From the Philippine Daily Inquirer . ====================== VERY FEW people are aware of it, but we are going to have a new set of peso bills very, very soon. We may be giving our godchildren the new bills as gifts this Christmas. The present set of paper Philippine currency will be phased out. New coins will be issued later. The question is, why is the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) doing this secretly and hastily? The nation is totally unaware of what will happen to their money or how the new money will look like. Malacañang, Congress and the Supreme Court did not know anything about it beforehand. The BSP claims that it is an independent entity and can do anything it wants. In other words, it is the fourth branch of government, a co-equal of the executive, legislative and judicial branches. To get a favorable reaction from President Aquino, the images of his parents, Ninoy and President Cory, will be in the P500 note. But no one, except insiders and a privileged few, have seen th...

Revillame scraps ABS-CBN contract

From the Philippine Daily Inquirer . ====================== MANILA, Philippines—Willie Revillame wants out. ABS-CBN says, “No way.” The controversial TV host Monday said in a press conference that he was rescinding his contract with the network, on account of the shabby treatment it was giving him. Revillame complained of what he believed were continued violations of the terms of his contract with the Kapamilya station. The TV host is bound by a contract until September 2011 to the Lopez-owned network. ABS-CBN gave Revillame his biggest break through the daily noontime game show, “Wowowee,” which was recently canceled after more than five years. In a statement released shortly after Revillame’s press conference in a Quezon City restaurant, the network insisted that it was the TV host who violated “behavioral provisions” of the contract when he threatened management during the May 4 episode of “Wowowee.” Threat to resign On that show, Revillame demanded the dismissal of another network ...

Joey Velasco - Sa Kambas ng Lipunan - On the Canvas of Society

I would like to share this video I saw. It's a sad story about the state of the street children in our society. Here's the description of the video from Youtube. For further information visit www.joeyvelasco.net On the Canvas of Society While you watch this video, allow me to share with you some words as a backdrop or background of this video. What follows is an excerpt from Joey Velasco's speech at the start of his Book Launching and First Solo Exhibit in Art Asia. His book is entitled "They Have Jesus: The Stories of the Children of Hapag" and was launched on Oct. 13, 2006. -excerpt starts- Jesus Christ never wrote a book. The only scene in the Gospel where we saw him write was on the sand. But what he wrote was blown by the wind. What was etched in our minds forever in history and in eternity was his preference for the outcasts and rejects. In the future, I will be like the sand that will be blown by the wind. I will remain an unknown artist and writer. I will ...

Manila Water Shortage

From the Philippine Daily Inquirer . ====================== MANILA, Philippines—Authorities and water distributors are considering tapping Laguna Lake and other new sources for the water needs of Metro Manila, which has been hit by rationing because of the very low level of Angat Dam, the metropolis’ main source of drinking water. Maynilad Water Services Inc. has resorted to rotating water interruptions in large swaths of its west zone concession area over the past several days. Its counterpart in the east zone, Manila Water Co., is mulling water rationing in the coming weeks as rainfall is expected to normalize only by September. Maynilad Water has started drawing water from Laguna Lake, the country’s largest lake, for its customers in Muntinlupa City since June. Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson said the government was looking for alternative sources of water like Laguna Lake, Marikina River and Pampanga River to mitigate the effects of the drought. ====================== So a c...

Aquino hits weather bureau for error

From the Philippine Daily Inquirer . ====================== MANILA, Philippines—Presiding over his first disaster management briefing, President Benigno Aquino III Wednesday took to task the weather bureau for its failure to notify the public that Typhoon “Basyang” (international codename: Conson) would directly hit Metro Manila. Officials from various agencies reported to Mr. Aquino the extent of the typhoon’s damage and the steps taken to normalize the situation at the emergency meeting of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in Camp Aguinaldo. After listening to an update by weather bureau chief Prisco Nilo, Mr. Aquino wondered aloud why the bureau failed to update its bulletin on the typhoon’s track. The President said that contrary to the last bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday that Basyang would make land fall in Aurora, it struck the metropolis, toppling power lines and trees. Significant ...

P-Noy Stops At Red Light

Image
Well this is a first. The SUV bearing President Benigno Aquino III, along with the PSG vehicles, stops on a red light at the intersection of Quezon Boulevard and Araneta Avenue in Quezon City on its way to Malacañang on Tuesday. If President Noynoy Aquino has no other achievement other than stopping at red lights and now abusing his authority for the rest of his term. Then he's got my respect. Yes, I'm easy to please considering how every government official no matter how lowly they are abuses their authority. Meanwhile... MANILA, Philippines—All eyes seemed to be on the country’s No. 2 man ever since President Benigno Aquino III, as part of his inaugural pledge to lead by example, ordered his escorts to strictly obey traffic rules. And so Vice President Jejomar Binay apologized to the public Tuesday after a TV footage showed his security convoy beating the red light in Quezon City the previous day. “The Vice President apologized to all motorists who may have been inconvenien...

A Letter From A Brave Filipino

Got this from an e-mail. If only... ======================== To all Filipinos Everywhere: I used to think that corruption and criminality in the Philippines were caused by poverty. But recent events tell me this isn't true. It is one thing to see people turn into drug addicts, prostitutes, thieves and murderers because of hunger and poverty, but what excuse do these rich, educated people have that could possibly explain their bizarre behavior? And to think I was always so relieved when petty snatchers got caught and locked away in jail because I never fully realized that the big time thieves were out there, making the laws and running our country. Every night, I come home & see these "honorable" crooks lambast each other on TV , call each one names, look each other in the eye and accuse the other of committing the very same crimes that they themselves are guilty of, is so comical and apalling that I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I have never see...
