3 Cost Effective Ways to Solve Metro Manila's Traffic Problem

Image
The Facebook page of ANC 24/7 is asking for its reader's suggestion on how to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem. This got me thinking, "what is the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem?" It's easy to make suggestions, what's hard is the implementation and the cost of implementation. So what is the the best way to solve Metro Manila's traffic problem and the most cost effective solution? Punitive Fines Add caption First of all, any implementation will definitely cost money, a lot of money. The cause of the traffic mess is the people themselves so it's only right that those causing the traffic problem should be fined and the fine should hurt. That way, the fines will pay for the cost of enforcing the law. The fines should start at P500 and goes up every week if you don't pay it within 15 days. To enforce this and prevent people from ignoring the fine. It will be tied to their driver's license or car registr...

Stories of Bravery and Tragedy

Summarized from the Philippine Daily Inquirer . During the massive flooding caused by Typhoon Ondoy that wrecked havoc to Metro Manila on Sept 26, 2009. We're heard stories of our fellowmen doing acts of heroism and bravery with little thoughts about their own safety. Just like the story about a Judge Ralph Lee of Regional Trial Court Branch 83. “I heard that so many families were already stranded on their rooftops because water from the Tullahan River was already overflowing,” Lee, 49, told the Inquirer. Lee drove from his Fairview home for the stricken community 30 minutes away with his personal water craft, life vests and two rubber boats he used on weekend wakeboarding sorties and mobilized a rescue effort that saved 100 lives. Because of Judge Lee's efforts, people were calling him "Superman". There were other super heroes, like Muelmar Magallanes, a powerful swimmer who braved rampaging floods to save more than 30 people, but ended up sacrificing his life in a l...

Senators OK resolution for P1M each from PDAF

I couldn't believe this when I read it. “Be it hereby resolved by the Philippine Senate, to enjoin all senators to allocate at least P1 million from their Priority Development Assistance Fund to aid victims of Ondoy,” according to Senate Resolution 1378 filed by Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago on Monday. P1 million!?! Multiplied by 24 senators that's only P24 million! Doesn't each senator get P200 million of PDAF each!?! How generous of them...

Filipinos At Their Finest During Typhoon Ondoy

Image
I saw this on Facebook and was touched by the bravery of some people during the massive flood caused by Typhoon Ondoy in Metro Manila on Sept 26, 2009. I'm reposting here for everyone to see. Despite the neck high water which was at the time still rising, Gerald Anderson and his brother still managed to check on their neighbors. In times of crisis such as this our roles in society really doesn't matter as long as we try our best to help others. Teachers, bankers, drivers, CEO's, nurses, lawyers, actors, whatever. Kasi sa huli the only thing that matters is na PINOY tayong lahat.

Social Networking Sites Outdo News Organizations

During the massive flood happening in Metro Manila that was caused by Typhoon Ondoy, there was very little updates on major news organizations like The Philippine Daily Inquirer. I found out about how bad the typhoon was from conversations with my friends through Yahoo Messenger. As I logged on to Facebook, I was getting continuous updates on friend's wall on details of the flood. I checked Inquirer.net and other sites but there was hardly any mention. There were reports of the flood, but there wasn't any photos or videos. As the situation got worst, he was telling me their parking lot is flooded and it's still rising. He had to move his car out to higher ground to save it. I asked him to take some photos because he said that it never floods in Ongpin. I couldn't believe it either since the 20 years I've been there, I've never seen it flood higher than one inch. Here he was telling me it's up to his knees. So he took some photos with his iPhone and e-mailed ...

Survivors of Typhoon Ondoy Are Angry

New reports from the Philippine Daily Inquirer are coming in that survivors of Typhoon Ondoy are angry at the lack of aid. Some survivors reported that they were trapped inside their homes or on the roof tops but were ignored by rescue helicopters flying overhead. Countless people were dismayed by the government failure to come to their aid at the height of the massive floods that swept Metro Manila and nearby provinces at the weekend. In the wake of Ondoy’s onslaught, the chief of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) had an advice to the public: They have the responsibility to heed storm warnings. “Instead of just watching soap operas on TV, they should also watch the news,” Dr. Prisco Nilo said. He said Pagasa had issued flood warnings as early as Thursday and even raised storm signals the following day. That's funny, since I was born, I've never seen PAGASA or any government entity put up emergency advisories or public se...
